Columbus Clippers News Release
The Columbus Clippers were bested by the Pawtucket Red Sox in game one of the teams' three-game set tonight at McCoy Stadium.
The Paw Sox used five runs in the first four innings and a solid start from William Cuevas to topple the Clippers, 6-3.
They kicked things off in the first with an RBI double from Rusney Castillo and an RBI single from Sam Travis to take a 2-0 lead against Clippers' starter Stephen Fife.
They plated two more in the third, this time on a Kyle Wren sac-fly and a Mike Miller RBI single, making it 4-0.
Their fifth run came on Dan Butler's fifth homerun of the season, a solo shot off Fife in the fourth.
The Clippers waited until the fifth to strike against Cuevas, but it was a meaningful run as Connor Marabell drilled his first career Triple-A blast over the wall in right to pull Columbus closer at 5-1.
Yu Chang followed suit with a solo homerun, his 9th of the season, in the seventh inning to make it 5-2.
Cuevas was pulled after that, having scattered two runs on five hits over six and two-thirds innings. He walked two and struck out nine.
The Paw Sox cancelled out the Chang homer in the home half of the seventh, though, when Adam Lind singled in Tiny Renda to extend the lead to 6-2.
The Clippers woke up the offense again in the eighth inning, loading the bases against Pawtucket reliever Robby Scott for Brandon Barnes. He lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Eric Stamets to bring the Clippers within 6-3. Scott would strike out Drew Maggi with runners on the corners to escape the jam, however.
They'd be blanked in the ninth, securing the 6-3 victory for Pawtucket.
The teams will be back in action at 7:05 p.m. at McCoy Stadium tomorrow.
