The Syracuse Chiefs and Norfolk Tides split a doubleheader Wednesday night at Harbor Park, with the Chiefs taking game two 8-1 after the Tides came from behind to win the opener, 2-1. The Chiefs were the home team in game two to make up for the postponed game in Syracuse between the two teams on April 15th.
Syracuse (41-60) began the game one scoring in the third inning. Drew Ward started the frame with a double and Chris Dominguez singled to put runners on first and third. Andrew Stevenson followed with a ground ball to second, and Ward scored from third to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.
Norfolk (54-47) scored both of its runs in the seventh inning. Austin Voth held the Tides to just one hit in the first six innings. But in the seventh, Pedro Alvarez singled and Drew Dosch came in to pinch run. Then Andrew Susac singled to put runners on first and third. After a sacrifice bunt by Luis Sardinas moved the runners up, Jimmy Cordero came into the game for the Chiefs, and Garabez Rosa greeted him with a single to score Dosch to tie the game. Mike Yastrzemski followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Susac to win the game, 2-1.
In game two, the Chiefs jumped out to the lead in the first inning against Matt Wotherspoon. Stevenson walked, Alejandro De Aza singled and Matt Reynolds singled to load the bases. Wotherspoon then hit Jose Marmolejos to force in a run. Yadiel Hernandez followed by grounding into a double play, but De Aza scored from third for a 2-0 Chiefs lead.
The Tides added their lone run in the second. Alvarez doubled off Carlos Torres, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on Sardinas' groundout to first to cut the deficit to one.
Bengie Gonzalez was responsible for the next two Chiefs runs. In the second, Ward walked and Gonzalez tripled down the right-field line to score Ward for a 3-1 lead. Then in the third, Dominguez doubled, Ward walked, and Gonzalez drove in his second run on an RBI single for a 4-1 edge.
Syracuse broke the game open in the fourth. Francisco Jimenez walked De Aza and Matt Reynolds doubled into left-center to plate the run for a 5-1 score. After a groundout, Hernandez doubled to deep center to score Reynolds for a 6-1 advantage. Pedro Severino then capped the scoring with a two-run home run, deep over the left-field fence for an 8-1 Chiefs lead.
The Chiefs and Tides wrap up their series with a doubleheader Thursday, with game one scheduled to start at 12:05 p.m.
