CHARLESTON, SC - A four-hit, two-run top of the ninth pushed the Asheville Tourists past the Charleston RiverDogs, 6-4, in front of 3,358 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Tuesday Night.
With the victory Asheville improves to 9-4, 38-44 overall, while Charleston drops to 5-8, 36-46 overall.
In the top of the ninth with a 4-4 tie, Charleston's Ryan Flannery allowed a one-out infield single to Delta Cleary. Cleary proceeded to steal second and then score the go-ahead run around the tag of catcher J.R. Murphy on Avery Barnes' single to right to give Asheville a 5-4 lead. Nolan Arenado added some insurance to the lead when his RBI single to left plated Barnes from third, staking the Tourists to a 6-4 advantage.
Closer Sheng-An Kuo allowed a hit in the bottom half, but fanned Kelvin Castro to end the game for his second save of the series and 10th of the season.
Flannery (5-4) takes the loss after giving up four hits and two earned runs with 2.2 innings on the mound. The Carlstadt, N.J. broke a streak of 30 consecutive innings without surrendering an earned run.
The Tourists wasted little time lighting up the board, when Angelys Nina's infield RBI single plated Barnes from third, giving Asheville a 1-0 lead. Barnes walked to reach base and moved into scoring position on a passed ball by J.R. Murphy, then stole third for his 18th theft of the year.
The Asheville lead held until the bottom of the third, when the RiverDogs erupted with a three-run, four-hit frame. Emerson Landoni's sac fly to right knotted the game up at 1-1, when he scored DeAngelo Mack from third. Mack ripped his team-leading fourth triple of the season to center to reach base.
Slade Heathcott and Castro followed up with back-to-back singles, with Heathcott moving to third on a Joey Wong throwing error. Heathcott showed off his 1st round wheels once again, stealing home while Castro coasted to second to give Charleston the lead, 2-1.
Castro then crossed home on Jimmy Parades' RBI single to center, giving Charleston a 3-1 lead going into fourth.
Charleston starter Brett Marshall went 4.1 innings in taking a no decision. The Highlands, Tex. native surrendered six hits and two earned runs, with five fans, in just his second start this season --first at home -- since joining the club last week in Augusta.
Asheville bounced back in the top of the fifth, when Arenado ripped a RBI double to center, scoring Angelys Nina from third for a 3-2 tilt. Nina singled to reach base and moved to third on a Brett Marshall botched pickoff attempt.
Jose Gonzalez knocked a double to left off Charleston reliever Ryan Acosta to push Arenado home from second and tie the game back up at 3-3 going into the bottom of the fifth.
Dallas Tarleton singled to center to open the sixth, and moved all the way to third when on a Charleston error. Cleary's one-out chopper to the mound was acrobatically gloved by Acosta, but his throw to first sailed over Rob Lyerly's head, permitting Tarleton to score for the 4-3 cushion.
The Tourists' lead didn't hold for long as Neil Medchill, playing in his first game since July 2 in Augusta, doubled off the wall in left to open the bottom of the sixth. Murphy's humpback RBI single to left plated Medchill to tie the game back up, 4-4.
Asheville starter Wes Musick lasted 5.2 innings in a no-decision, letting four runs to the plate on eight hits with four strikeouts.
Heathcott, Paredes and Landoni all had two hits for the RiverDogs, who stole a season-high seven bases in the loss. Paredes swiped a pair and now has 31 this season to rank fourth best in the loop.
The final game of this four-game series is set for a special 12:05 p.m. first pitch Wednesday. Charleston sends left-hander Josh Romanski (2-2, 3.94), while Asheville counters with right-hander Nick Schnaitmann (6-5, 5.67)
