Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
GREENSBORO, NC - Trevor May was victorious in his 2010 BlueClaws debut, as Lakewood hung on late for their fifth win in a row, 7-6 over the Greensboro Grasshoppers.
May (1-0) allowed six hits and four runs through six innings. He walked at least three batters in all but three of his High-A starts, but walked just two batters Tuesday and struck out four.
The BlueClaws (10-2, 52-30) scored first in the top of the first for the third straight game against Greensboro (7-6, 39-44), with Jiwan James scoring on a wild pitch to make it a 1-0 game.
Alan Schoenberger brought in Adam Buschini on a suicide squeeze in the second to extend the lead to two, and a Sebastian Valle two-run double in the third made it 4-0 Lakewood.
The Grasshoppers got back into the game with a two-run shot by Chase Austin in the bottom of the third to cut the Claws lead to two. But Schoenberger came through with the bases loaded and two outs, doubling in three runs in the fifth to put the Claws up 7-2.
Schoenberger went 1-for-3 on the night, driving in four.
The Hoppers weren't finished, and scored two runs in the sixth. In the ninth, Austin hit his second home run of the game (tenth of the season) with a runner on to cut the deficit to one. However Eric Massingham was able to stop the bleeding and earn his third save of the season.
Chad James (3-5) took the loss for Greensboro.
12:30 pm Wednesday RHP Jonathan Pettibone (3-2, 4.77) faces RHP Matt Montgomery (4-8, 3.29).
