Asheville Tourists News Release

How do you bounce back after giving up 21 runs in your previous game? That's a question that Kannapolis would love to have the answer to, as once again the Tourists continued their blistering late season form, and once again the Intimidators imploded.

Fan Appreciation Night could not have gotten off to a better start for the Tourists. After Xavier Cedeno had taken care of business in the top of the first, the Tourists began right where they left off in Kannapolis. Once more they were helped out by ineffective pitching, as Kannapolis starter Jason Rice walked the first four batters, scoring a run for the home team in the process. The bases loaded situation brought Phillip Cuadrado to the plate, and to the absolute delight of the home crowd he crushed a fastball over the head of Rice and out of the park for a Grand Slam, and a 5-0 lead after the first inning.

The second inning produced even more fireworks. After Cedeno had taken care of the visiting batters in similar fashion to the first, Jason Rice once more loaded the bases without registering an out. Up stepped Phillip Cuadrado once more, and for the second inning in a row blasted a grand slam home run, this time just scrapinig the foul pole in right field, scoring four runs to give the Tourists a 9-0 lead.

Cuadrado's second consecutive grand slam was not without controversy though. Kannapolis manager Omer Munoz was insistent that the ball had actually travelled the wrong side of the foul pole, and his protests to home plate umpire Travis Brown went a little too far, leading to him being ejected from the game. That was not the end of the story though, both pitcher Jason Rice and catcher Francisco Hernandez continued the protests, and were both also ejected from the game!

The visitors responded in the third inning with two runs off of one hit, one error, and two walks to get the I's on the board and bring them back to 9-2, but the Tourist moved the score along to 10-2 in the home half of the third, a Van Kooten lead off single converted by Kyle Blumenthal's RBI double.

From then on the Tourists went into cruise control, not registering a hit after the third inning, but also keeping the visiting offense off the board at the same time, allowing the fans to enjoy the festivities of "Fan Appreciation Night".
