LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The South Atlantic League's postseason All-Star team was announced on Tuesday with Matt Maloney and Carlos Carrasco named from the BlueClaws roster. Maloney received the higher honor of being named the S.A.L.'s Most Outstanding Pitcher for the 2006 season.
Maloney has had the best year on the mound in BlueClaws team history. The southpaw has a shot at the South Atlantic League Triple Crown this season. Maloney currently leads the S.A.L. with 16 wins and 172 strikeouts while his ERA of 1.99 is second best. Maloney holds the Lakewood record for all-time and single-season wins and strikeouts and his 16 wins is tied for the best in Major and Minor League Baseball.
Carrasco has also pitched extremely well for Lakewood this season. His ERA of 2.19 ranks third in the S.A.L. and is in the top five in Single-A ball. Carrasco is third in the league with 152 strikeouts behind only Maloney and another Lakewood pitcher, Josh Outman.
Lakewood's pitching staff easily leads the S.A.L. in many categories. The team ERA of 3.06 is 17 points better than the next best team ERA. Lakewood is the only team that has not allowed over 1,000 hits this year and the 19 shutouts held by the BlueClaws is the most in professional baseball.
The S.A.L. award for Most Valuable Player went to Eugenio Velez of the Augusta GreenJackets while the award for the Most Outstanding Major League Prospect went to Andrew McCutchen, an outfielder with the Hickory Crawdads. Manager of the Year honors went to Augusta's Roberto Kelly.
The BlueClaws have clinched a playoff spot in the Northern Division of the South Atlantic League. There are only four regular season home games left during the 2006 season.
