Tough Night at the Park Ends Four-Game Winning Streak

Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

During a 100-game regular season there will be nights when things just don't go your way.

Just ask the Winnipeg Goldeyes' how Saturday night's 4-0 loss to the Gary SouthShore RailCats went. They'll tell you, "it was just one of those nights."

On a perfect night for baseball in front of 6,788 spectators at Winnipeg's downtown ballpark, the RailCats put a halt to Winnipeg's four-game winning streak and dropped the Goldeyes record to 10-4 on the season.

"It's hard to win when you don't score," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. "You have to tip your cap to Gary. They pitched real well tonight. They played great defense and they scored some runs. It's just unfortunate we didn't get anything generated on offense."

The Goldeyes pitched relatively well last night, but they still never seemed to be in this one. They scraped out only six hits and while they did get a runner to third in the first and the fifth and stranded 12 runners, they didn't get a clutch hit all night.

"We got some runners on base, we just didn't get a hit with men in scoring position," Forney said. "Gary's pitchers were good. They got in trouble, but they threw some good fastballs at us and knocked the bats out of our hands.

"It happens every now and again."

Gary scored a pair in the second off Goldeyes starter Zach Baldwin when Kyle Haines hit a solo homer and then Brian Kolb doubled, went to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch.

The RailCats made it 3-0 in the fifth when Chris Carrara singled, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out infield single by Mike Massaro.

Gary made it 4-0 in the seventh. Goldeyes reliever Dexter Carter struck out the first two hitters he faced and then Mike Coles walked and scored all the way from first on a double by Rico Washington.

And that was it. The Goldeyes used four pitchers. Starter Zach Baldwin, who just arrived from his home in Barboursville, West Virginia, went just two-plus innings in his first start of the year allowing two runs on three hits. Baldwin (0-1, 9.00 ERA) took the loss while reliever Marco Gonzalez (1-0, 0.00) got the win for Gary.

The Goldeyes and Gary wrap up their three-game series at Shaw Park on Sunday afternoon at 1:30. Andrew Johnston (0-2, 4.50 ERA) will get the start for Gary while Ace Walker (1-0, 3.45) will take to the bump for Winnipeg.

Tickets are available at Ticketmaster. The game can also be heard live on TSN Sports Radio 1290 with Paul Edmonds and seen live on Shaw TV with Scott Taylor, Shawn Coates and Mitchell Clinton.
