Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
KANSAS CITY, KS - Amarillo Sox starting pitcher Derek Christensen delivered a seven strikeout performance in seven innings on Saturday night to propel the Sox over the Kansas City T-Bones 4-2 at Community America Ballpark.
Christensen (2-0) walked only two batters, allowing two runs off six hits in his third start of the season. T-Bones starter Brian Grening (2-1) pitched well in the loss, allowing seven hits and all four runs while also striking out seven batters.
Adam Buschini and Tim Alberts added key homeruns in the victory.
The Sox wasted little time to take the lead. Adam Buschini stepped in and hit the first pitch he saw in the first inning for a triple and scored on a subsequent Jake Opitz RBI groundout for a 1-0 Amarillo lead.
Kansas City fought back in the second inning. Trevor Coleman, Devon Goodwin and Justin Bass all led off with singles, while Jose Duran grounded out to score Coleman from third. Christensen struck out Gus Milner and coaxed a Brandon Jones groundout to end the inning with the score tied 1-1.
Following the two homerun game the previous night, Tim Alberts teed off again in the fourth inning. The solo homerun put Amarillo up by a run. Buschini followed a fifth inning Jason White walk with a two-run homerun for a 4-1 Sox advantage.
Chistensen settled in and retired 12 straight batters after loading the bases in the second. Kansas City got back on the board in the sixth inning as Ray Sadler led off with a single, went to second on a walk, took third on a fielder's choice and scored on a Coleman sacrifice fly for a 4-2 score.
After Christensen left after the sixth, Andrew Bowman pitched a scoreless seventh, Chad Povich pitched a scoreless eighth, while Johnson pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the 4-2 win.
Sox pitchers struck out 13 T-Bones batters on the night.
With the win, the Sox improve to 8-7 while the T-Bones fall to 7-8. Sunday, Amarillo will take on Kansas City for the final game of the three-game set at 5:05pm. The game can be heard by visiting www.tbonesbaseball.com. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
