Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts set a franchise record with their 10th consecutive win on Saturday night, beating the Grand Prairie AirHogs 5-4 in 10 innings at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the 10th, C.J. Ziegler hit a two-out, solo home run that just cleared the left field fence and gave Wichita its 10th straight victory.
Grand Prairie scored first for a second straight night and took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Keanon Simon led off the game with a double to right-center. Simon took third on David Thomas' groundball to second, and scored on Trent Lockwood's groundball to first.
Wichita tied the game in the bottom half. Jake Kahaulelio singled to right and advanced to third on John Rodriguez's single through the right side of the infield. Juan Richardson followed with a groundball to third that bounced past Brian Myrow. The infield single scored Kahaulelio with the tying run.
Zane Chavez hit a two-run home run to right in the top of the second to give Grand Prairie a 3-1 lead.
The Wingnuts chipped away in the third on a sacrifice fly to right from Richardson, and tied the game when Rodriguez singled to left with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
The AirHogs took their third lead of the night in the top of the seventh. Chavez doubled to right leading off, took third on a sacrifice from Bridger Hunt, and scored on Yasutsugu Nishimoto's line drive single to left.
The Wingnuts answered back again in the bottom of the seventh. An error by Myrow allowed Kahaulelio to reach first with one out. Kahaulelio took second on a wild pitch, and scored the tying run when Rodriguez ripped a single to right field.
Nick Walters, Edgar Martinez, and Matt Nevarez combined for three shutout relief innings. Nevarez earned the win with a scoreless 10th, and stranded the go-ahead run on third base.
Left fielder David Thomas made a leaping attempt on Ziegler's game-winner, but came down without the ball to indicate the home run.
Derek Blacksher started for the Wingnuts and took a no-decision. Blacksher allowed four earned runs on seven hits in seven innings. Blacksher walked two and struck out one.
Josh Strawn also took a no-decision in the start for Grand Prairie. Strawn allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits in five and one-third innings. Strawn walked one and struck out one.
Griffin Bailey took the loss for the AirHogs.
Ziegler's home run extended his hitting streak to nine games in a row. Ziegler has 11 RBI during that stretch.
