Toronto Defenceman Lead Marlies to Win over Belleville

March 4, 2018 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Belleville Senators News Release

The Toronto Marlies received three goals from defenceman in a 4-1 win over the Belleville Senators Sunday afternoon.

Andreas Englund scored for Belleville while Danny Taylor made 47 saves. Toronto had goals from Trevor Moore, Justin Holl, Vincent LoVerde and Andreas Borgman while Garret Sparks turned aside 15 shots.

After a lively start by the Senators, that saw Gabriel Gagne shrug off a defender before being turned away by Sparks, the biggest talking point at the start of the game was Marlies defenceman Justin Holl plowing through Sens goalie Taylor leaving a wreckage behind him and then taking a seat in the box.

The Sens failed to capitalize on the power play but did take the lead at 9:58 as Englund scored his first of the year on a lovely backhander after taking a feed from Tyler Randell.

The Marlies found its equalizer at 11:16 on Moore's wrister from the slot as Sens forward Ethan Werek sat in the box. The Sens were unlucky not to get out of the period with the lead as Sparks made a sprawling double save to deny Jack Rodewald and then Gagne.

Toronto struck early into the second as Holl bagged his fifth of the season just 30 seconds before the Marlies extended its lead to 3-1 at 14:36 through LoVerde's third of the year as he wired a one-timer past Taylor on the power play.

Borgman's third of the year at the AHL made it 4-1 as he let a wicked wrister go that Taylor couldn't keep out 4:05 into the final frame.

Gagne played in his 100th career AHL games while Randell tallied his 50th career AHL point.

Belleville is back in action on March 9 against the Laval Rocket but don't return home until March 16 when they host the Toronto Marlies. Tickets are available.
