Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins fell to the Springfield Thunderbirds Sunday afternoon 2-0 in the final game of their three-game weekend. McIntyre made his 35th start of the season in net and the P-Bruins suffered their third shutout of the season.
Providence and Springfield spent the first period of the game playing strong defense back and forth, preventing any goals. Colton Hargrove had the best scoring opportunity for the P-Bruins with his breakaway in the first half of the period, however Harri Sateri was able make a pad save. Tim Erixon had the Thunderbirds best chance of the period, but his shot rang the right side post to keep the game scoreless after one.
After 40 minutes of game time, neither the P-Bruins or the T-Birds could find the back of the net. Despite two power plays for Providence in the last half of the period, Sateri stayed strong and denied all chances. The Bruins best chance came from Peter Cehlarik five minutes into the second, where he attempted a wrap-around shot but was stuffed by defensemen Cameron Brown. Springfield's best shot in the period came when Curtis Valk had a slapshot from the top of the left circle during a power play with a rebound going out to Dryden Hunt. Hunt thought he had an open net but a terrific glove save from McIntyre robbed him and things scoreless into the third.
The Thunderbirds were finally able to pull ahead, scoring in the first five minutes of the third period. Ryan Horvat blocked and led a shot from the blue line to Anthony Greco for a slapshot from the top right circle. He beat McIntyre to the upper left side of the net for a short handed goal to give Springfield a 1-0 lead. The P-Bruins had a competitive period filled with multiple power play chances, but an empty net goal from Chase Balisy with less than a second remaining sealed the deal for Springfield and gave Providence their third shutout of the season 2-0.
McIntyre stopped 34 of 35 shots while Sateri stopped all 35 he faced. Providence was 0/3 on the power play and 2/2 on the penalty kill. This game concludes the three-game weekend for the Bruins and their next game will be Wednesday, March 7 in Canada facing the Laval Rocket at 7:30PM.
