Tornadoes split double dip

Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Augusta, NJ -- The Worcester Tornadoes hung on for a 4-3 victory in the completion of Wednesday's suspended game, but were shut out for just the second time all season in a 5-0 loss to the Sussex Skyhawks at Skylands Park in the regularly scheduled game on Monday night.

The Tornadoes and Skyhawks picked up the suspended game in the bottom of the 2nd inning, with Worcester leading 2-0 by virtue of a B.J. Weed two-run 1st inning home run. The Tornadoes made it 3-0 in the 3rd inning, when Alex Trezza and Chuck Jeroloman rapped back-to-back two out singles off lefty Craig Snipp (4-4), and Trezza scored on a throwing error by Sussex third baseman Jay Yaconetti on a ball hit by Omar Pena. But Sussex came back against righty Alex Pena (1-3), as Alex Frazier hit a solo home run in the 4th inning and rookie Catcher Cliff Panezitch tied things up with a two-run double in the 5th. But the Tornadoes took advantage of more porous Skyhawks defense, pushing across a second unearned run of the night when an errant throw to third base from Frazier, the Skyhawks leftfielder, went into the Worcester dugout, allowing Jeroloman (who had walked and moved to third on the single to left by Mike MacMillan) to score the go-ahead run. Closer John Birtwell inherited a first-and-third-one-out jam in the top of the 7th, but slammed the door by striking out Panezitch and leadoff man Ron Perodin to end the Skyhawks threat. Alex Pena (1-3) earned his first victory of the season with 6.1 solid innings and Snipp (4-4) took the loss. Birtwell picked up his 9th Save of the year.

In the regularly scheduled game, Sussex righthander Kyle Ruwe (8-4) was brilliant, recording 13 groundball outs en route to tossing a complete game, four-hit shutout. The Tornadoes offense could muster only four singles, as they were blanked for just the second time on the season. The Skyhawks got to Matt Weagle (8-4) for a run in the 1st on a Jorge Moreno RBI single and three more in the 2nd (only one earned) on three singles, a walk and a costly error by third baseman Jeff LaHair. The Skyhawks tacked on an insurance run in the 6th on Matt Weston's 12th home run of the season, a solo shot to right off Weagle. Only one Tornadoes baserunner reached as far as second base, and that with two outs in the top of the 7th and final inning. Ruwe (8-4) bounced back from three straight subpar outings with his best performance of the season for the Win and Weagle (8-4), despite recording his league-high fourth complete game, suffered the defeat.

The Tornadoes will try to get back to their winning ways on Tuesday night, when they play Game Two of their four-game series in Sussex against the Skyhawks. Righty Shaun McNamara will get the start for Worcester and he will be opposed by former Tornadoes righthander, Matt Salvato. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.

The Tornadoes return home on Sunday, Aug. 3 to begin an eight-game homestand. The third is Tykes Club Sunday and Monday is another Guaranteed Win Night while Tuesday is Mouse Pad Giveaway!
