Rapidz stay hot with win

(ATLANTIC CITY, NJ) Monday, July 28, 2008 - The Ottawa Rapidz continued their quality play Monday night, with an 8-3 win over the Surf in Atlantic City to leadoff jumpstart the four-game series.

After a slow start the Rapidz scored twice in the top of the fourth to take the lead. Jabe Bergeron and Kyle Geiger singled with one out and Pete Pirman singled to bring Bergeron home. Nate Hall added another single to score Geiger to give the Rapidz a 2-0 lead.

Both teams scored in the fifth inning, with Juan Infante, Jake Daubert and Jabe Bergeron doubling for the Rapidz. Bergeron later came in to score on a wild pitch from pitcher J.C. Huguet. Atlantic City's Josh Burrus leadoff the inning with a homerun, followed by a single by Eddie Kim to put the Surf on the board. With one out, Kim scored on Gil Zayas' double that reduced the Rapidz lead to 5-2.

The Rapidz added one more run in the top of the seventh and again in the top of the eighth to take a 7-2 lead. In the seventh, the Infante-Daubert duo combined their efforts again, hitting two doubles. With two runners on base in the eighth William Plaza committed an error allowing Jared Lemieux to score on the play.

The home team added a run in the bottom of the eighth before seeing the Rapidz scoring one more in the top of the ninth to seal the victory.

The win goes to Adam Hawes (4-7) who allowed just two runs (both earned), six hits, one walk and struck out seven in 6.2 innings. J.C. Huguet (7-3) got the loss for the Surf pitching 6.1 innings, allowing six runs (all earned), on 12 hits, with no walks, and eight strike outs.

Tanner Watson (1-4, 5.82 ERA) will square off against Adam Cox (7-2, 2.12 ERA) in the second game of the series on Tuesday, July 29. The Rapidz return home August 4 for a seven-game home stand against the Sussex Skyhawks and Brockton Rox, which will feature "Break the Attendance Record Night" presented by East Side Mario's.
