Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Augusta, NJ -- Righty Junior Guerrero tossed seven brilliant shutout innings and the Worcester offense pounded out a season-high-tying 19 hits en route to a 13-2 thrashing of the Sussex Skyhawks at Skylands Park on Wednesday night.
The Worcester offense set the tone early, plating three 1st inning runs off Skyhawks righthander Rick Lawyer (1-1) on a Francisco Caraballo RBI groundout and an Alex Trezza two-run home run to right-center. The Tornadoes upped their lead to 6-0 in the 5th, scoring three more times on two sacrifice flies and a Trezza RBI single. Worcester put things away in the late innings against the Sussex bullpen, scoring twice in the 7th (Chris Colabello RBI double and Trezza RBI groundout), four times in the 8th (RBI singles by Scott Grimes and Colabello, a Josh Farkes RBI groundout and a Trezza sacrifice fly) and once more in the 9th (B.J. Weed RBI single) for a 13-0 lead. Righthander Justin Edwards allowed two runs in the bottom of the 9th on three singles and a walk, but it was far too little too late for Sussex.
Guerrero (5-4) scattered just seven singles over seven shutout innings in his best start of the year to pick up the win. Lawyer (1-1) was charged with 9 hits and 6 earned runs in 4.1 innings to take the loss. Grimes, Weed and Colabello had four hits apiece, as the top three hitters in the Worcester order combined to go 12-for-14. Trezza knocked in a season-high five runs. The Tornadoes look to take the series finale from the Skyhawks on Thursday night when they send lefty Tom Cochran to the mound opposite Sussex righthander Gary Galvez. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm.
The Tornadoes return home on Sunday, Aug. 3 to begin an eight-game homestand. The third is Tykes Club Sunday and Monday is another Guaranteed Win Night while Tuesday is Mouse Pad Giveaway! Monday-Wednesday will be "Tanks 4 Tickets," with $4 Grandstand and Box tickets and $1 hot dogs!
