Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Augusta, NJ -- Lefthander Tom Cochran continued his mastery of Can-Am League hitters and the Worcester offense gave him all the run support he would need in a three-run 5th inning, as the Worcester Tornadoes won the series finale, 4-1, over the Sussex Skyhawks at Skylands Park on Thursday night.
The Tornadoes scored in the 1st inning for the second straight night when Skyhawks starter Gary Galvez (2-5) uncorked a wild pitch, plating B.J. Weed with the game's first run. Worcester opened things up in the 5th inning, as Weed ripped a one-out double and Chris Colabello singled, putting runners on the corners. Francisco Caraballo, Alex Trezza and Chuck Jeroloman then followed with back-to-back-to-back RBI singles, as Worcester strung five hits together in all to take a 4-0 lead. That would be more than enough for lefty Tom Cochran (11-0), as the Worcester southpaw scattered 4 hits and 4 walks over 8 strong innings, with the only damage coming on a two-out RBI double by Sussex second baseman Chris Brown in the 6th inning.
Cochran (11-0) picked up the win for the tenth time in 11 starts this year and Galvez (2-5) pitched 8 effective innings but took the loss. Eddie Pena pitched a perfect 9th inning for his 4th save of the season. The Skyhawks went a combined 0-for-8 against Cochran with runners in scoring position. Worcester won for the first time in the Second Half when they failed to hit a home run. The Tornadoes are back in action on Friday night, as they head to Nashua for a doubleheader against the Pride. Righty Alex Pena will oppose Nashua right Hideki Nagasaka in Game One and righthander Chandler Barnard will go up against Pride righty Lance Stevens in Game Two. First pitch of Game One is set for 6:05pm.
The Tornadoes return home on Sunday, Aug. 3 to begin an eight-game homestand. The third is Tykes Club Sunday and Monday is another Guaranteed Win Night while Tuesday is Mouse Pad Giveaway! Monday-Wednesday will be "Tanks 4 Tickets," with $4 Grandstand and Box tickets and $1 hot dogs!
