Worcester Tornadoes News Release

WORCESTER - The Tornadoes were unable to sweep the New Jersey Jackals despite home runs from Scott Grimes and Alex Trezza, as they fell, 6-3, Thursday evening at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

The Jackals jumped on top in the second inning with an unearned run after a lead-off single by Juan Tejeda. Tejeda later advanced to third on a pass ball by catcher Alex Trezza and then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Andrew Larsen. New Jersey added three more runs off Tornadoes starter Tom Cochran in the third inning on a 3-run blast by Bryant Nelson to make it 4-0 Jackals.

Scott Grimes led off the bottom of the third with his 18th home run of the season, tying him with teammate Francisco Caraballo for second in the league. The Worcester team record for home runs was set by Andy Brown with 21 in 2005. New Jersey quickly answered though in the top of the fourth adding another unearned run after Tommy Murphy scored on a throwing error by Worcester shortstop Chuck Jeroloman. The scored remained 5-1 Jackals until the sixth.

In the sixth the Jackals loaded the bases up for the second consecutive inning against Tom Cochran, but they only scored one when reliever Justin Edwards walked Matt Lauderdale, forcing in Zack Smithlin from third base. With the score 6-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Alex Trezza ripped his 11th home run, a deep 2-run blast to right field, to make the score 6-3 New Jersey.

Jackals starter Ted Serro (5-3) registered the win with a strong 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, while striking out two and walking just one. Rusty Tucker struck out two en route to a perfect ninth and his 20th save of the season.

Tom Cochran (13-2) struggled in his 5.1 innings, surrendering six runs (four earned) on nine hits. Justin Edwards was solid out of the bullpen going 2.2 innings allowing just two walks and striking out one. Anthony Sullivan pitched the ninth allowing one hit and striking out two.

The Ottawa Rapidz come to town for a 3-game series starting Friday night. Righty Matt Weagle takes to the hill for Worcester against lefty Fraser Robinson. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
