Rapidz get bats going in win

(OTTAWA, ON) Thursday, August 21, 2008 - Looking to avoid the series sweep, Ottawa native Mike Kusiewicz and the Rapidz took on starter Lance Stevens and the Nashua Pride Thursday night. Kusiewicz (3-8) pitched a gem as the Rapidz took the final game of the series 10-4 in front of 2,384 fans at Rapidz Stadium.

The Ottawa starter allowed three runs (all earned) on 10 hits with three walks and three strikeouts in six innings pitched. Stevens (6-7) was credited with the loss leaving the game after allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits with five walks and striking out four batters in 4.2 innings.

Both teams opened the game with a pair of runs, tying the game at two after one inning of play. Bryan Duplissie hit a single and Mike Torres hit into a fielder's choice to score the runs for Nashua. For the Rapidz, Jared Lemieux lead-off with a triple and Jabe Bergeron walked to open the inning. Kyle Geiger plated both runners with a game-tying two-RBI double.

The game remained tied at two into the fourth inning until the Pride scored a single run to take a 3-2 lead. With two outs Dorian Rojas walked and scored on a hit by Ervin Alcantara to take the one-run lead.

With two outs in the fifth inning, the Rapidz exploded for four runs thanks to a three-run double by Jake Daubert and an RBI-single by Pete Pirman taking a 6-3 lead.

The Rapidz extended their lead thanks to a three-run homerun by Jabe Bergeron, his team-leading 12th of the season, for a 9-3 lead heading to the seventh inning. Both teams added a single run as the Rapidz went on to win by a commanding score of 10-4.

Making his first appearance for Ottawa in the win was newly acquired Rookie LHP Matthew Tosoni. The 6'4", 225 pounder from Whitby, ON was formerly with St. John's University (NCAA), pitching in 45 games with the Red Storm, accumulating a 15-9 record with a 3.32 ERA in 200.2 innings pitched.

The Rapidz depart on a seven-game road trip before returning home Friday, August 29 for their final series of the season against the Worcester Tornadoes. Tomorrow's match-up against the Tornadoes will feature North Gower, ON native Fraser Robinson (4-6, 5.06 ERA) pitching for the Rapidz against Matt Weagle (9-7, 4.07 ERA) for Worcester taking place at 7:15 pm.
