Brockton Rox News Release
Atlantic City, NJ (August 21, 2008) - LF Jud Thigpen hit two, two-run home runs on Thursday night, and the Rox hit four home runs in all to take the series finale against Atlantic City 9-6 at Bernie Robbins Stadium. The Rox tallied eight times in the first five innings, and RHP Mike Smith finished strong for his second win in a Rox uniform.
Atlantic City took the first lead of the game, scoring twice against Smith in the first inning. The righty would need thirty pitches to get the first three outs, but settled in and finished with eight strikeouts after six innings.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the second inning, Thigpen hit his first home run of the game, a two-run shot to tie the game. One inning later, he hit another two-run home run immediately following a two-out, two-run single by DH Phillip Cuadrado and gave Brockton a commanding 6-2 advantage. Thigpen and Cuadrado combined to drive in seven of the Rox nine runs and scored five total runs. Cuadrado also had a solo home run in the fifth inning.
Atlantic City incited some tense moments in the ninth inning as the Surf pulled the score to within 9-5 and loaded up the bases with nobody out. With the tying run at the plate, closer RHP Jerry Dunn was summoned from the bullpen. Dunn recorded his league-leading 21st save of the season, facing just two batters to get the final three outs.
Two Rox single season records were tied in the game. Thigpen's second home run was his 14th of the season, and Dunn's save tied a mark set by former Rox RHP Conor Brooks in 2003. The Rox captured its second consecutive series with the win, and outscored Atlantic City 28-12 in the series.
Brockton now travels to Little Falls, NJ to finish the final road trip of the season with three games against the New Jersey Jackals. RHP John Kelly (7-5, 2.59 ERA) will face New Jersey LHP Isaac Pavlick. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
