Atlantic City Surf News Release

Atlantic City, N.J. - SS Anthony Granato followed up a two-home run evening on Wednesday with a 3-for-5 outing on Thursday, but the Atlantic City Surf dropped a 9-6 decision to the Brockton Rox in a Can-Am League contest at Bernie Robbins Stadium, in the final game of a three-game set.

The Surf (20-15) drew first blood with 1B Eddie Kim's two-run single to center. Brockton (17-19) quickly responded with a pair of scores in the second on LF Jud Thigpen's two-run home run down the left-field line. The Rox then broke the game wide open with a four-run third, scoring on DH Phillip Cuadrado's two-run single and Thigpen's second two-run blast of the night, making the score 6-2, Brockton.

Kim hit an RBI single in the bottom of the third to make a small dent in the Rox' lead, but Brockton responded with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, courtesy of a SS Dominic Ramos sacrifice fly in the fourth and Cuadrado's solo blast in the fifth, to extend the lead to 8-3.

After the Rox scored a run in the ninth on 3B Eduardo Rios' solo homer, the Surf made noise in their half of the inning, scoring on Granato's two-run double and adding another run via a double-play ball, but it was as close as Atlantic City would get, as Brockton closer Jerry Dunn came in to shut the door for his league-leading 21st save of the season.

Mike Smith (2-0) earned his second victory of the season, allowing three runs on four hits in six innings of work, striking out eight. Brian Rodaway (9-8) was saddled with the loss for the Surf, giving up seven earned runs in five innings.

Granato finished the evening with a pair of doubles and two runs scored, while Kim was the only other Atlantic City player with more than one hit. For Brockton, league batting average leader 2B Melvin Falu went 3-for-5, while Cuadrado, Thigpen and CF Eugene Julien had two hits each.

With the loss, Atlantic City falls to third place, one game behind first-place Quebec for the second-half championship with 12 games remaining. The Surf start a three-game series at second-place Sussex on Friday night. Adam Cox (7-2) makes his first start in nearly a month for Atlantic City, while Gary Galvez (4-5) throws for Sussex.
