New Jersey Jackals News Release
Worcester, MA - Jackals starter Ted Serro (5-3) hurled 6 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits as he earned the win in New Jersey's 6-3 victory over the Worcester Tornadoes on Thursday night at Hanover Insurance Park. Worcester starter Tom Cochran (13-2) turned in his poorest outing of the season, allowing six runs - five earned - on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings as he fell for just the second time this season.
The Jackals jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. In the first inning, an Andrew Larsen sacrifice fly plated 1B Juan Tejeda to give New Jersey a 1-0 advantage. SS Bryant Nelson then hit a three-run home run, his fifth of the season, in the top of the third inning as the Jackals took a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Tornadoes RF Scott Grimes led off with his 18th home run of the season to pull Worcester within three at 4-1. However, the Jackals got the run right back in the top of the fourth when DH Tommy Murphy walked with one out and advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt by Cochran. Later in the inning, CF Zack Smithlin reached on an infield single and Murphy scored on a throwing error by Worcester SS Chuck Jeroloman to extend the Jackals lead to 5-1. The Jackals made it 6-1 when C Matt Lauderdale drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning.
Worcester C Alex Trezza connected on a two-run home run in the sixth inning to pull the Tornadoes back within three at 6-3, but that's as close as they would come as New Jersey's bullpen shut the door. For the Jackals, reliever Dustin Cameron allowed one hit in 1 2/3 innings and closer Rusty Tucker fired a perfect ninth inning to earn his league-leading 20th save of the season.
The Jackals return home on Friday night to begin their final homestand of the season with a three-game series against the Brockton Rox. New Jersey sends left-hander Isaac Pavlik (8-4, 3.51 ERA) to the hill against Brockton right-hander John Kelly (7-5, 2.89 ERA) with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch at Yogi Berra Stadium. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, tune in to the team's live webcast at www.jackals.com to catch every inning of action. Cody Chrusciel provides the play-by-play with the broadcast beginning ten minutes prior to first pitch.
