Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

The Albuquerque Isotopes (10-6) had the bases loaded and no one out in the top of the ninth but failed to erase a two-run deficit as the Omaha Royals (8-8) held on for a 3-1 victory on a blustery Friday evening at Rosenblatt Stadium.

Albuquerque third baseman Joe Dillon started the ninth frame by roping a double off of Royals reliever Byron Embry and was followed by Matt Padgett, who walked, and Josh Willingham, who, following a pitching change that saw Omaha closer Steve Stemle enter the game, hit an infield single to load the bases. Stemle, however, coaxed ‘Topes first baseman Larry Barnes to hit a come-backer which he fielded cleanly before tossing it to Paul Phillips who relayed the ball to Ken Harvey for the 1-2-3 double play. Stemle then struck out Derek Wathan to preserve the 3-1 Omaha victory and end Albuquerque's two-game road winning streak.

Although the Isotopes struck first with a run in the second on a Barnes sacrifice fly that scored Dillon, they surrendered two runs to the Royals in the seventh on a misplayed pop-up off of the bat of Luis Ugueto that was affected by the howling Omaha winds and a run-scoring triple by Jaime Jones.

The O-Royals then added an insurance run in the eighth on a Phillips RBI single to give Omaha the 3-1 advantage. ‘Topes reliever Pat Flury (0-1) took the loss while Royals reliever Wes Wilkerson (2-1) earned the win and Stemle (1) the save.

The Isotopes will return to Albuquerque on Saturday for the first of four games with the Oklahoma RedHawks. Featured promotions during the homestand include the world-famous Myron Noodleman on April 23, 50-cent hot dogs on April 25, and Orbit masks for the kids on April 26. Tickets for these and all ‘Topes games are available at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at local Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com, and Ticketmaster by phone at 883-7800.
