(DES MOINES, IA) â Two right-handers, Bobby Brownlie for the Iowa Cubs and Ezequiel Astacio for Round Rock, hooked up in a great pitcher's battle on a raw, gusty Friday evening in Iowa. In the end, Iowa won it 5-2.
Astacio blinked first, giving up a solo homer to LF Ben Grieve leading off the bottom of the second, and the Cubs led 1-0.
Round Rock tied it in the 4th inning, as Brooks Conrad opened the inning with a single, a Todd Self double moved Conrad to third, and he scored on a ground out by RF Barry Wesson, and the Express knotted the score at a run apiece.
The Express took the lead in the 6th on an RBI double by 1B Carlos Rivera, scoring 3B Mike Coolbaugh, but the lead didn't last long.
Iowa pounded out two runs on three hits in the bottom of the 6th as CF Calvin Murray and 1B Micah Hoffpauir drove in runs. The Cubs did the same thing in the bottom of the 7th, including a suicide squeeze bunt that scored a runner from third, and the Cubs won it 5-2 to win the series three games to one.
Round Rock returns home for a 7:05 PM start on Saturday against the New Orleans Zephyrs, the AAA affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Two lefties toe the rubber. Ed Yarnall, a former New York Yankee goes for New Orleans against Round Rock's Wandy Rodriguez.
