Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Robert Fick went 3-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs, and the Portland Beavers won their seventh straight with a 5-4 victory over the Fresno Grizzlies before 4,359 at PGE Park Thursday night.
Chris Oxspring (1-1) turned in his best start of the year, allowing two runs (1 earned) on five hits in 6.0 innings of work for the win.
With the Beavers trailing by a run, Fick led off the second with a solo shot to right and added a two-run home run just over the left field wall in the third to give the Beavers (9-6) a 5-1 lead.
Brad Baker danced around trouble in the ninth to notch his fourth save and secure the Beavers' eighth win in their last nine tries.
Brian Cooper (2-2) gave up all five runs to take the loss for the Grizzlies, who have dropped their last four games.
Brian Dallimore grounded out to third in the top of the first to plate Adam Shabala with the game's first run.
After Fick tied things in the bottom of the second, Ben Risinger and Josh Barfield walked. Michel Hernandez drove home Risinger with a sac fly to center and Oxspring chipped in with a slicing single to left-center to plate Barfield for a 3-1 lead.
Fresno (7-8) made things interesting in the late innings, though, plating a run on Julio Ramirez' RBI double in the seventh and rallying for two more in the eighth.
Baker retired the first two batters in the ninth and walked the next two before coaxing a flyout from Linden to end the game.
Ramirez went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Fresno.
The Beavers conclude their opening homestand on Friday night against the Grizzlies, looking for their second straight series sweep and eying their most successful homestand in their five seasons back in the Pacific Coast League. Portland has yet to sweep an eight-game homestand in those five seasons, twice logging a 7-1 mark coming into the 2005 campaign.
NOTES: The Beavers placed catcher Seth McCauley on the disabled list (retroactive to April 19) on Thursday with a right-elbow strain.
