Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The Albuquerque Isotopes (17-8) took a three-run lead through four innings, but an 18-hit assault from Omaha (13-10) lifted the Royals to an 8-3 win over the 'Topes Monday in the series opener at Isotopes Park.
The 'Topes put a run up in the second and two more in the third, but Omaha touched up Albuquerque for eight runs over the next five innings to hand the Isotopes just their second loss in the last 13 outings.
Mike Kinkade and Jason Wood accounted for five of Albuquerque's six hits on the evening. Kinkade finished the day 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Wood chipped in two hits and a couple runs.
Albuquerque starter Jeff Fulchino (1-1) was solid through the game's first four innings, but unraveled a bit in the fifth and would be pinned with the loss-his first of 2006. Fulchino tossed 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on 11 hits. He struck out three and walked two. Out of the bullpen Buddy Carlyle surrendered three runs in 2.2 innings of work, and Jimmy Anderson gave up a solo homer in the ninth-his only inning of work.
With runners on the corners in the second, Paul Hoover grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, but a run would cross and the 'Topes led 1-0 early. Two innings later, back-to-back two-out doubles from Kinkade and Hoover plated two more Albuquerque runs, pushing the lead to 3-0.
From there, though, the 'Topes came undone. A two-out, two-run double followed by an RBI single for Omaha in the fifth knotted the score at three through five. The Royals pushed across the eventual game-winner in the sixth on a double by Mike Aviles, making the score 4-3 Omaha. The O-Royals put up three insurance runs in the eighth-two via a Paul Phillips homer-and a solo shot by Justin Huber in the ninth gave the Royals a five-run lead and the series-opening victory.
Omaha banged out 18 hits on the night, with eight-of-nine starters collecting at least two. Phillips and Chip Ambres each kicked in three-hit efforts.
Royals starter Adam Bernero (1-0) earned the win, scattering three runs on five hits with five Ks. Kyle Snyder (1) worked a scoreless final four innings to earn the save.
The Isotopes hit the second leg of an eight-game homestand Tuesday. Albuquerque will send Renyel Pinto (2-0, 1.75) to the hill, and the O-Royals will counter with Brian Bass (1-2, 4.50).
Upcoming in this homestand is a special Cinco De Mayo Celebration at Isotopes Park, where a mariachi band will be on-hand to entertain fans throughout the game, which will be capped by a spectacular fireworks show. Tickets are available at the Isotopes Park Box Office, Ticketmaster outlets and on-line at www.albuquerquebaseball.com. For more information, please call (505) 924-2255.
