Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
MAY 1, 2006, 7:35 p.m.: OMAHA ROYALS (12-10) @ Albuquerque Isotopes (17-7)
HOME: 8-6 (35-37 in '05) AWAY: 4-4 (37-35 in '05) vs. Albuquerque: 2-2 (4-12 in '05)
TONIGHT: The Royals open an 8-game road trip with the 1st of 4 games at Albuquerque. Omaha is coming off a 3-3 home stand (2-1 vs. Memphis and 1-2 vs. Round Rock). Tonight's 1st pitch is 7:35 p.m. and the air-time is 7:15 p.m. on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.
SUNDAY: Round Rock belted 3 home runs and downed the Royals 7-3 in what was scheduled as the 1st game of a doubleheader. Rain forced game 2 to be postponed until July 22. Omaha starter J.P. Howell (3-2) took the loss, giving up 6 runs on 10 hits - including 2 homers - in 5.0 innings. Ruben Gotay led off the bottom of the 1st with a home run to tie the game at 1-all. Gotay also singled in the 3rd and scored on Aaron Guiel's 2-run homer to put the Royals ahead 3-1. But, Round Rock scored 3 runs in the 4th to take the lead for good.
ROYALS REPORT: Guiel's 2 RBI Sunday ranks him #1 in career RBI with Omaha. He has 338 RBI, 1 more than Kit Pellow. Guiel's team leading 7th homer this season moves him into a tie for 2nd place in the PCL. It was the 98th home run of his Omaha career, just 1 behind Jed Hansen for 2nd place on Omaha's career homer charts. *** Gotay's home run Sunday was his 1st of the season and the 1st leadoff home run in a game for Omaha since Damian Jackson hit one on September 3, 2004 at Iowa. *** Since posting a 2.65 ERA while winning each of his 1st 3 starts, Howell has allowed 12 earned runs over 10.0 innings for a 10.80 ERA in losing his last 2 outings. *** Mike Aviles has hit in 5 straight games (..333, 6-18, 1 HR, 3 RBI) and in 10 of his last 11 tilts (.333, 14-42, 2 HR, 7 RBI). The Royals 3rd baseman has seen his average climb from .087 to .246 over the 11-game stretch. *** Ricky Bell and Justin Huber have both gone 3 games without a hit. Bell is in an 0-for-11 slide. Huber went 0-for-9 in the 3 games vs. Round Rock, although he coaxed 3 walks. Huber has 14 walks in 22 games this season and owns a .417 on-base percentage. *** Round Rock's leadoff batter, Charlton Jimerson, struck out in all 4 of his at-bats Sunday. He became the 1st Omaha opponent to fan 4 times in a game since Chris Richard had it happen in a game that went 12 innings on June 14, 2005 at Oklahoma. *** Only two Royals were left on base yesterday, setting a new season low.
STARTERS: RH Adam Bernero (0-0, 3.86) vs. RH Jeff Fulchino (1-0, 3.71)
Bernero makes his 2nd start and 6th appearance of the season. The 29-year old right-hander moved into the rotation last Monday vs. Memphis. He finished 1 out shy of qualifying for the win in a 3-1 victory (4.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K). Bernero was relieved with 2 runners on base and 2 outs in the 5th and Omaha leading 2-0. Danny Tamayo gave up an RBI double, but allowed just 1 more hit over the final 4.1 innings to get the win. Bernero faced the Isotopes at home on April 13, giving up 2 runs in 2.0 innings during the Royals 11-5 win. Following that game, which was Bernero's 2nd appearance of the season, his ERA stood at 7.50. He has allowed just 1 run over 8.0 innings in his last 3 games to drop his ERA to 3.86. In 2005, Bernero opened the season with Atlanta. In 36 relief appearances for the Braves, he was 4-3 with a 6.51 ERA. He went 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA in his 1st 20 games, but went 1-3 and had an 11.57 ERA in his last 16 outings. He was optioned to Richmond on July 14 and went 5-5 with a 3.40 ERA in 10 games (9 starts) in Triple-A. Prior to this season, 84 of his 87 minor league appearances came as a starter, with Bernero compiling a 30-30 record and 3.29 ERA. Bernero was signed by KC as a minor league free agent on November 21, 2005. He was originally signed by Detroit as a non-drafted free agent on May 21, 1999 out of Armstrong Atlantic State University in Georgia.
