Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The Isotopes (20-20) fell to the Reno Aces (15-26) in the series opener after a five-run ninth-inning outburst put Reno up 8-3. Four Topes put together a multi-hit game as Albuquerque outhit Reno 11-10.
Starting pitchers Blake Johnson and RHP Charles Brewer locked horns early. Both pitchers held their opponent scoreless through the first three innings and each allowed one hit during that stretch. After three innings, Topes RHP Johnson tossed six innings of three-run ball and allowed six hits, a walk and fanned a season-high eight, tying the team's season high.
Reno scratched across the game's first run in the fourth frame. SS Chris Owings collected the Aces second hit of the ballgame to spark the offense. 1B Kila Ka'aihue followed with his seventh double of the season scoring Owings from first base. The Aces would get one more to go up 2-0 on the Topes with an RBI single by 3B Matt Davidson.
The Aces improved their lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning. 2B Tyler Kuhn walked to begin the inning and was followed by a C Tuffy Gosewisch single to right field. CF Tony Campana then came up with an RBI Single sending Kuhn across home plate.
The Topes bats came alive in the sixth inning as Albuquerque climbed back into the game. With one out, CF Tony Gwynn Jr. (1-for-5) singled into center field. 2B Elian Herrera (3-for-5) knocked a single of his own putting two runners on for RF Alex Castellanos, fresh off the disabled list. Castellanos (1-for-5) sliced the Topes deficit to one run, 3-2, on his first double of 2013 scoring Gwynn Jr. and Herrera. 1B Rusty Ryal (2-for-4) then evened the contest at three with a broken-bat single plating Castellanos.
The Topes bullpen was strong in the late innings but faltered in the ninth. RHP Red Patterson fired a perfect seventh inning striking out a batter. Righty Geison Aguasviva came on in the eighth to pitch a perfect frame keeping the Aces bats silent. RHP Steve Ames (1-1, 2.63) suffered the loss for Albuquerque allowing five ninth-inning runs, three earned, on four hits. RHP Anthony Ortega recorded the final out of the ninth but tossed a wild pitch.
Davidson walked to start the ninth inning and was immediately followed by a RF Alfredo Marte single. The scoring threat grew when pinch-hitter Evan Frey reached on an error loading the bases with no outs. Reno regained the lead 4-3 on a sacrifice fly by Kuhn. Gosewisch sealed the deal with a monster blast to left field putting the final touches on an 8-3 win. Campana scooted home on a wild pitch the cap the night's scoring.
Southpaw Joe Paterson (2-5, 3.38) earned the win for Reno. He pitched one-third of an inning allowing a walk. The Isotopes and Aces will do it again in game two of their four-game series tomorrow May 20 at 7:05 PM from Isotopes Park. Albuquerque will send southpaw Aaron Laffey (1-0, 4.76) against Reno's LHP Tyler Skaggs (2-5, 6.21. Catch all of the game action on 610 AM "The Sports Animal" with Josh Suchon on the call.
