Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - A late inning comeback fueled a 7-4 victory for the Round Rock Express (21-20) over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (24-15) Friday night at Dell Diamond.
After falling into a 3-0 hole, Round Rock worked its way back for its ninth come-from-behind victory. A three-run fifth and four-run seventh propelled the Express to snap a season-long five-game losing streak and its first home win since May 5.
Express starter Ross Wolf worked his way in and out of trouble over the first two frames, loading the bases twice but allowing just one run. The right-hander settled in and put together two 1-2-3 innings as the Express entered the fifth trailing by one.
The Sky Sox padded their lead in the top half of the fifth after a double off the bat of second baseman Charlie Culberson, followed by a triple by center fielder Tyler Colvin. Designated Hitter Matt McBride plated Colvin on a sacrifice fly to center as Colorado Springs took a 3-0 lead at the midway point of the game.
Round Rock answered in the bottom of the fifth, making Sky Sox starter Jeff Manship pay for a leadoff walk. After the free pass, the next two E-Train hitters singled to put one run on the board. Catcher Eli Whiteside grounded into a fielder's choice that the Sky Sox were unable to turn into a double play, allowing the second Express run to cross to the plate. After Whiteside advanced to second on a throwing error to the plate by Colvin, second baseman Jurickson Profar brought home the third run of the inning on a RBI double to knot the score at three apiece.
Wolf retired the next six Sky Sox hitters until the E-Train was able to break through in the bottom of the seventh.
After two singles to begin the frame by the bottom of the order, centerfielder Engel Beltre moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Profar did not waste another opportunity to add to his RBI total for the night, singling in designated hitter Alex Buchholz to take a 4-3 lead. The second run of the inning crossed the plate when Whiteside scored from third on a wild pitch by reliever Cory Riordan. The big blow of the frame came off the bat of power-hitting first baseman Chris McGuiness when he cranked his sixth homer of the season, a two-run shot to put Round Rock up 7-3.
The Sky Sox got one run back in the top of the eighth, but southpaw Neal Cotts struck out the side in the ninth to close out the victory, snapping the E-Train's season-long losing streak at five games.
Wolf earned his first victory of the season after throwing a career-high 7.0 innings. Cotts picked up his first save of 2013 with a perfect ninth, while Riordan suffered the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in 1.2 innings.
The Express continues its homestand with game three of four against the Sky Sox Saturday night at Dell Diamond scheduled for 6:05p.m. The E-Train will send newly acquired right-hander Scott Richmond (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound to face Colorado Springs. Following Saturday's game, the first of four acts as part of the St. David's Summer Concert Series, presented by Dell will take the stage as fans will be treated with a post-game Bob Schneider concert.
