Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Chris Young went 1-for-1 with a run, two walks and a stolen base in his first rehab appearance with Sacramento, but the River Cats ultimately lost to the visiting Oklahoma City RedHawks by a score of 5-2 on Thursday evening at Raley Field.
Young led off the bottom of the first inning with a single through the hole at shortstop, then promptly stole second base without a throw from catcher Carlos Perez. After reaching third on a groundout from Cats shortstop Hiro Nakajima, Young crossed the plate on a Shane Peterson single, putting Sacramento ahead 1-0 after one.
After Oklahoma City tied the game at one on a wild pitch from Sonny Gray in the fourth, Sacramento retook the lead in the bottom half with a Jeremy Barfield sacrifice fly, scoring Stephen Vogt. The RedHawks then delivered a go-ahead, four-run seventh inning that saw bases-clearing bloop double to shallow left field with the bases loaded from second baseman Andrew Simunic. Oklahoma City scored their final two runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run double from first baseman Brett Wallace, ultimately winning, 7-2.
Gray exited with two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh, having allowed just one unearned run to that point. With reliever Travis Banwart on the mound, all three runs came around to score on Simunic's bloop double, giving Gray a final line of 6.2 innings pitched with eight hits, four runs-three earned-two walks and five strikeouts for his second loss.
In his eighth rehab start, Nakajima started at shortstop and batted second, finishing 1-for-4 with a double. Barfield and Peterson each drove in a run, accounting for the entirety of Sacramento's run production.
The two teams return to Raley Field at 7:05 p.m. on Fireworks Friday as River Cats southpaw Andrew Werner (3-5, 7.80 ERA) starts opposite RedHawks righty Ross Seaton (0-3, 9.38 ERA).
