Tacoma Rainiers News Release

TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers come-from-behind effort came up short in a 6-5 loss to the Memphis Redbirds in extra innings at Cheney Stadium on Thursday night.

The Rainiers erased a 5-1 deficit with a four-run rally over the eighth and ninth innings only to have the Redbirds claim the lead for good in the top of the 10th. Memphis first baseman Brock Peterson doubled to right field to score Vance Albitz for the go-ahead, game-deciding run.

Outfielder Corey Patterson completed Tacoma's comeback effort with a run-scoring single that tied the game at 5-5 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Stefen Romero went 2-for-5 in the series opener to lead a Rainiers lineup that collected a combined seven hits. Rich Poythress was responsible for Tacoma's first appearance on the scoreboard after hitting a solo home run in the sixth - his fifth home run of the season and second over his last two games.

Left-hander Brian Moran was responsible for the go-ahead run in the 10th and fell to 1-2 this season. Starter Jimmy Gillheeney surrendered five runs on six hits and walked two with one strikeout over 5.1 innings.

The Rainiers (24-17) play the second game of the club's four-game series against the Redbirds (21-17) at 7 p.m. tomorrow, May 17. Right-hander Andrew Carraway is scheduled to start for Tacoma against Memphis left-hander Tyler Lyons.
