August 1, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Scott Seabol mashed a third-inning triple and a ninth-inning home run, but a 17-hit effort for Albuquerque wasn't enough Wednesday night as the Isotopes (55-56) dropped a 13-7 decision to the Salt Lake Bees (58-54) in the series opener at Isotopes Park.
The Bees jumped all over Isotopes starter Nic Ungs-scoring once in each of the first two innings and posting a six-spot in the fourth-and never looked back. Albuquerque led briefly, 3-2, thanks to a three-run third inning, but Salt Lake would go on to score 11 runs over the next three frames to coast to the victory.
The loss fell on Ungs (3-4), who surrendered eight runs on seven hits over four innings. He walked four and punched out two. Harvey Garcia came on in the fifth and gave up three runs in two innings, then Erasmo Ramirez allowed two more in his lone inning of work. After that, Nate Field and Ross Wolf tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth, respectively.
The Albuquerque offense managed to get to Bees starter Ervin Santana, who was recently optioned from the Angels, but the right-hander banked on a slew of run support to collect the victory. Santana (1-1) allowed six runs on 13 hits through six innings. He struck out seven and walked just one in a 101-pitch effort. From there, the Salt Lake bullpen took over. Aaron Pullin and Matt Wilhite each tossed a scoreless frame, while Steven Shell surrendered a run-via Seabol's solo blast-in the ninth inning.
With Salt Lake ahead 2-0, the âTopes answered in the third, using an RBI double for Valentino Pascucci, a run-scoring triple for Seabol and a sacrifice fly by Brett Carroll to take a 3-2 lead. Salt Lake would then post six runs in the fourth, going ahead 8-3. The âTopes got one back on a run-scoring groundout for Reggie Abercrombie to pull to within four in the home half of the frame.
The Bees would once again have an answer, though. This time a three-run fifth put Salt Lake ahead 11-4. Albuquerque scored twice in the sixth, using a John Baker solo home run and an RBI single for John Gall to move to within five.
After allowing two more Salt Lake runs in the seventh, Albuquerque tried to muster a rally in the final frame. A lead-off, solo home run off the bat of Seabol-his 27th-was as much scoring as the âTopes would get, though.
Three âTopes-Abercrombie, Carroll and Baker-each finished the game with three hits. All nine batters in the Albuquerque starting lineup picked up at least one hit, and Baker fell just a triple short of the cycle.
Salt Lake's Bobby Wilson drove in six runs on the night-helped by a three-run homer in the fourth.
The Isotopes and Bees will meet in game two of the series on Thursday night at Isotopes Park. Left-hander Chris George (5-7, 5.60) takes the ball for the âTopes. Salt Lake turns to righty Henry Bonilla (8-6, 5.66). First pitch is set for 7:05 PM. Key Chains go to the first 3,000 fans, courtesy of Comcast.
