
Gonzalez Dominates Cubs

Des Moines, IA - Enrique Gonzalez struck out a season high 12 batters over seven shutout innings to lead the Sidewinders to a 6-1 win over the Iowa Cubs on Wednesday night at Principal Park.
Gonzalez, scheduled to start Tuesday but pushed back because to Wednesday because of rain, allowed just three hits and did not walk a batter. He recorded at least one strikeout in each inning and posted two punch outs in the second, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Over his last three starts, the Sidewinders right-hander has tossed 18 consecutive scoreless innings.
Tucson provided Gonzalez all the run support he would need with two runs in the third on a Robby Hammock single and a Chris Carter sacrifice fly. The Sidewinders added a run in the fifth on Alex Romero's base hit to make it 3-0 and Cubs reliever Carmen Pignatiello had back to back throwing errors in the seventh to extend the lead to 4-0.
Iowa broke up the shutout with back to back doubles off Randy Choate in the eighth inning. Geovany Soto's drive to left-center scored Felix Pie.
The Sidewinders tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the ninth as Alberto Callaspo and Hammock doubled in runs.
Hammock went 2-5 with two RBI and Romero was 3-5 with a RBI. Callaspo had two hits, a RBI and scored four runs, making him the first Sidewinder this year to score four times in a game.
The Sidewinders and Cubs continue their four game series on Thursday night at Principal Park. Right-hander Casey Daigle (9-2, 5.57) starts for Tucson against right-hander Cory Bailey (3-2, 3.32) for Iowa. First pitch is at 5:05 Tucson time. The game will air LIVE on COOL 1450 beginning at 5:00.
