Rapid City Rush News Release
(Rapid City, SD) - The Rapid City Rush hosted the New Mexico Scorpions in the second game of the weekend's doubleheader. The night before saw the Rush explode for 6 goals. Unfortunately, Rapid City couldn't repeat from the night before as New Mexico came out on top, 3-2.
On Friday night, the Rush scored 4 goals in the first period which was a season high for goals in a period. On Saturday night however, it was all New Mexico in the opening period. The Scorpions came out looking to avenge last night's loss, and were the first to find the back of the net just 3:20 in the period when Mitch Stephens snuck one past Rush goaltender Miguel Beaudry. Both teams had powerplay chances in the period, but neither was able to capitalize on the advantage. New Mexico put another point on the board at the 16:23 mark of the period. Scorpion forward, Seth Leonard grabbed a goal, which was set up by Andrew Smale and Craig Macdonald. New Mexico's strong first period left them with the lead, 2-0.
The Rush began the middle frame with a switch between the pipes as Lanny Ramage took over for Beaudry. Ramage would face 12 shots from the Scorpions in the period while the Rush sent 10 in on Jason Wolfe as both goaltenders were perfect. The period ended with the Scorpions maintaining their lead, 2-0.
The Scorpions got on the board quickly in the third, when just 1:27 into the period Leonard found the back of the net once again. Leonard was assisted by Craig Macdonald, who tallied his second assist of the night, and increased the Scorpion lead to 3-0. Rapid City would finally get on the board at 11:34 of the third. Derek LeBlanc and Gio Flamminio would set up Blaine Jarvis to get end Wolfe's shutout bid, making the score 3-1. The Rush would make it a contest when Jon Pelle found the back of the net at 13:45 of the period. Pelle's powerplay goal was assisted by Rich Hansen and Jamie VanderVeeken. The final 6 minutes would feature flurries for the Rush, but unfortunately that was all the Rush could find as they fell to New Mexico, 3-2.
Rapid City maintained their dominance on special teams holding the Scorpions scoreless on 4 powerplay chances. Rapid City ended up 1-for-3 on the man-advantage, bringing the powerplay to 3-for-5 over the two games. Final shots were 43-36, Rapid City With the edge.
After the game, the Rush auctioned off special Mardi Gras themed jerseys to benefit the Naja Shriners.
Up next for the Rush will be a home match up against the Corpus Christi IceRays on Wednesday, January 21. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m.
