(Rapid City, SD) - The Rapid City Rush and the New Mexico Scorpions kicked off the first night of their weekend doubleheader at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Ice Arena on Friday night.

This was the first meeting between the two teams, and Rapid City came away with the win, 6-4. The first period saw a lot of action between the pipes. Rapid City's Jon Pelle was able to tap the puck into the back of the net first at the 6:37 mark in the period. Pelle's goal was assisted by Rich Hansen and Gio Flamminio. Less Than two minutes later, the Scorpions were able to send one past Miguel Beaudry when Neil Trimm found the back of the net at 8:27 in the period as Chris Robertson and Dan McGoff set up the play. Jon Pelle was able to give the Rush the lead once again when he redirected a shot past Scorpions goaltender Andrew Matrin at 11:12 of the period. Pelle deflected a shot from Derek LeBlanc as Eric Nelson added the second assist.

Keeping the scoring fire alive, Chris Robertson grabbed a goal at the 12:56 mark on a play assisted by Aaron MacInnis. Rapid city would counter with a goal by Chris Lipsett who sent a one-timer past Martin at the 17:33 mark in the period. Lipsett's powerplay goal was assisted by Hansen and Pelle. After an exciting period of play, the Rush were in the lead 4-2. Rapid City held the advantage in shots 16-11.

The second period wouldn't see as many points being put on the board, but it certainly didn't disappoint hockey fans in the arena. New Mexico was the first team to put another point in the board in the middle frame when Mike MacDonald grabbed a goal at 6:16 in the period as his goal was assisted by Andrew Smale. The Scorpions would get another one past Beaudry at the 11:40 mark in the period when Chris MacDonald found the back of the net, and received assists from Tom Maldonado and McGoff. The Rush would eventually respond late in the period as Derek LeBlanc grabbed a late goal at 18:35 in the period. LeBlanc was set up by Hansen and Jamie VanderVeeken. The period ended with the Rush maintaining their lead, 5-4.

The entertaining play of the game didn't stop in the third period. The Rush were the only squad to find the back of the net in the third as Brady Olsen found the back of the net at 15:16. Olsen scored on a breakaway that was assisted by Jarvis and Sheen. The goal gave the Rush an insurance goal as it solidified the Rush win, 6-4.

Special teams were key for the Rush as New Mexico was held scoreless on 4 powerplay chances while the Rush went 2-for-2 on the man-advantage. Beaudry made 32 saves to pick up his 11th win of the season. The Rush have now won 5 of their last 8 games.

Rapid City and New Mexico will face off again Saturday, January 17, 2009 at 7:05 pm in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. At the end of the game, specialty Mardi Gras jerseys will be auctioned off to benefit the Shriner's Hospital.
