Oilers Drop RiverKings in Shootout

Tulsa, OK) -- The Tulsa Oilers rallied with a late goal in the third period and scored the only goal in the shootout for a 3-2 win over the Mississippi RiverKings at the BOK Center in Tulsa on Saturday night.

Stephen Margeson opened the scoring for the RiverKings, deflecting a shot from Derek Landmesser into the net for his third goal of the season at the 7:44 mark of the first period for a 1-0 lead. Darrell Stoddard also assisted on the play.

Tulsa answered with a power play goal from Jeff Christian, his 17th goal and eighth power play tally, at the 16:41 mark of the first for a 1-1 tie at the first intermission.

Mississippi regained the lead early in the second period when Dallas Steward deflected a centering pass from Adam Smyth into the net for a 2-1 lead. The goal was Steward's fourth of the year since coming from Augusta of the ECHL.

However, the Oilers forced overtime late in the third period, when Sean Collins beat goaltender Kevin Beech for his sixth goal of the year with less than three minutes remaining to force the overtime period.

There was no scoring in overtime and the shootout was scoreless until Collins scored again as the fourth shooter to give Tulsa a 1-0 lead. Goaltender Davis Parley sealed the win by stopping Jeff Nelson in the final round.

Mississippi remains in a second place tie in the Northeast Division with Bossier-Shreveport, two points behind Oklahoma City. The RiverKings are 23-13-1 entering a home game Friday against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees.
