Cincinnati Cyclones News Release

CINCINNATI - Toledo Walleye Evan Rankin's 17th goal of the season with 8:59 remaining broke a 3-3 tie and led the club to a 5-3 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones. Wasted was a two goal effort from Cincinnati early in the third period to tie the game at three each. Jimmy Kilpatrick, Matt Pierce and Scott Reynolds each had two points for the Cincinnati in the defeat.

Despite the loss, the Cyclones lead the North Division with 49 standings points. Toledo is second with 48, while Kalamazoo is third with 46 and Wheeling has 43.

Toledo opened the scoring at 3:34 of the opening period when Mike Hedden deflected a shot from Luis Tremblay on the power play for his eleventh score of the campaign. Malcolm MacMillan notched the other assist on the score. The lead extended when Derek Nesbitt drove up the right wing side and one-timed a pass off the left half wall from Ryan Stokes for his seventh score of the year at 16:15. Tremblay had the second assist on the lamplighter. Toledo outshot Cincinnati, 11-10, in the period. The Cyclones had a 1:13 stretch in the period with a five-on-three power play chance but were unable to capitalize.

Cincinnati started the second period with a 3:49 power play, the carryover of a four minute penalty assessed to Toledo's Chris Robertson after catching Barret Ehgoetz with his high stick. The Cyclones would capitalize with a power play goal 3:18 into the period, as Ehgoetz and Matt Pierce had the assists on the man-advantage marker. With less than 58 seconds to play in the second, Scooter Smith extended Toledo's lead back to two with his fourth goal of the season-all against Cincinnati-as Hedden and J.C. Sawyer handed out the helpers. The shots favored Cincinnati, 11-6, in the period.

A shorthanded score from Brian O'Hanley, his third of the season, at 1:42 from Scott Reynolds and Maxime Lacroix cut the lead to 3-2. Cincinnati would tie the game at 3:45 when Reynolds notched his 15th goal of the season on the power play. Pierce and Kilpatrick had the assists on the equalizing score. Toledo took the lead for good at 11:01 when Evan Rankin worked a two-on-one with Maxime Tanguay into the Cincinnati zone and buried the puck behind Cyclones netminder Robert Mayer. An empty net score from Scooter Smith at 19:03, his second of the night and fifth of the year, ended the scoring. The Cyclones won the shots battle in the period, 12-6, and in the game, 33-23.

Cincinnati was two-for-eleven on the power play-including three five-on-three situations, while Toledo was one-for-five with the man-advantage. Thomas McCollum took his second victory of the season for the Walleye, stopping 30 shots. Robert Mayer took the loss for Cincinnati-his sixth of the year-making 18 stops.
