Jackals Fall As Royals Get Comeback Victory
January 16, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals built a 2-0 first-period lead on Saturday night at the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pa. but could not hold onto the advantage as the Reading Royals came back to earn the victory 4-3 in front of 5,814 fans. The Jackals 2-0 first period lead came off of goals from Brendan Connolly and Olivier Proulx. After a Mat Robinson shot was stopped by Royals goaltender Matt Dalton, Connolly sent the rebound into the net from the top of the crease to make it 1-0 Jackals at 8:53 of the first period.
With the Jackals on a five-on-three power play, Proulx redirected a Jarrett Konkle slap shot past Dalton at 19:00 of the first period to give the Jackals the 2-0 lead.
While the Jackals had chances in the second period to extend their lead, the Royals were the ones who converted to cut the Jackals' advantage in half. Bryan Ewing, in his second game with the Royals, scored from the right circle, beating Jackals goaltender Julien Ellis high glove side to put the Royals on the board at 16:22 of the second period.
Just 33 seconds into the final session, the Royals tied the game when Ben Gordon scored from the left circle to make it 2-2. Ben McLeod one-timed a feed from Gordon into the net with the Royals on the power play at 4:51 of the third period to give Reading its first lead of the contest at 3-2.
Minutes later, Wes Cunningham one-timed a puck that narrowly slid over the goal line for his second goal of the season to tie the game 8:05 into the third period.
However, Ewing scored at 15:58 to give the Royals the final lead of the contest, and two late penalties for the Jackals ensured the Royals the 4-3 win.
Dalton stopped 36 of 39 Jackals shots, improving to 12-9-0-2 on the season, while Ellis made 23 saves on 27 shots, falling to 5-3-0-0 with the Jackals.
Elmira fell to 18-16-2-2 on the season while Reading upped its record to 21-14-1-3 in 2009-2010.
The Jackals travel to Wheeling to take on the Nailers on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. at WesBanco Arena.
