Trenton Devils News Release
Trenton, NJ, January 16, 2010 - The Florida Everblades capped an 11-game road trip with their second win over the Devils in consecutive nights, the 'Blades fifth win during their three-week haul. Barry Brust made 25 saves in the 3-1 win while Dave Caruso stopped 20 for his third consecutive loss.
Jordan Morrison netted the game-winner for Florida while Kevin Baker added to his growing point total, now with three goals and five assists in the past seven games.
The Devils owned an 11-9 shot advantage in a scoreless first period, however Caruso faced the closest goal opportunity as Bryan Leitch fanned on a wide open net at 4:24. Leitch attempted to one-time a rebound on the doorstep of the netminder's glove side but just got a piece of the biscuit, giving Caruso time to make a sprawling save on a dribbler that would have scored otherwise.
Trenton earned its first and only lead of the game on a power play goal by Tony Zancanaro at 15:44. Andy Thomas made a pass from the right point to a wide-open Slavomir Tomko on the left side who let one rip from the top of the circle and Brust made the stop. Hovering around the goalmouth, Zancanaro separated from his defender just as the rebound came to his stick, slamming the puck past Brust and solving Florida's second ranked penalty kill for his ninth of the season.
Just 31 seconds later, Florida answered on a deflection goal by Mike Bayrack, coming from a seemingly meager wrist shot by Baker on the far right wing hash marks, evening the score 1-1.
Morrison gave Florida a 2-1 lead during a two-man advantage exactly two minutes into the third. Matt Duffy passed the puck to point man Ernie Hartlieb for a shot on goal that Caruso stopped, but could not control. Morrison pounced on the rebound for his sixth this season.
The Devils mounted numerous scoring chances, cycling the puck and controlling play for extended durations of five-on-five hockey. When given power play chances, the rhythm disappeared and the frustrated offense could not score again. Mathieu Roy made it 3-1 by netting an empty net goal at 17:27, moments after Devils head-coach Rick Kowalsky pulled Caruso for an offensive zone draw. A slew of Devils penalties in the final minutes gave the home team little chance to make a comeback bid.
The Devils travel to Reading for a 1:05 matinee this Monday in hopes of improving upon their 13-18-4-5 record. The Devils have won just three of their last ten games while being outscored 35-32 in that span and have yet to defeat the Royals this year.
