October 20, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Toledo Walleye News Release
(Toledo, Ohio) The Toledo Storm (1-0-0) opened up its 2006-07 campaign and its defense of a North Division Championship with an impressive 2-0 win over the archrival Dayton Bombers (0-1-1) on Friday night in front of 5,158 at Toledo Sports Arena. The Storm have won the last four season openers including a 6-5 win over Dayton in last year's season premier.
The teams battled evenly throughout, playing scoreless hockey through two and half periods of play, but with plenty of power plays for both sides. Toledo committed 11 penalties on the day, resulting in 10 Bombers power plays. Dayton committed 12, giving the Storm 11 man advantages.
Jamie Tardif broke the scoreless tie at the 13:48 mark of the third period, wristing a shot through the legs of Bombers goaltender Adam Berkhoel, who made 29 saves on the night. Nick Parillo tallied the lone assist on Tardif's first professional goal. With a 1-0 lead midway through the third period, the Storm continued to push for an insurance marker, which Ken Magowan provided at 19:46 of the third period; the Storm's fourth leading goal scorer a year ago hit the empty net to give Toledo a 2-0 lead, and ultimately the win.
Logan Koopmans had a terrific season opener for the Storm, stopping all 33 shots he faced, earning his fourth professional shutout.
The Storm will now travel down I-75 to face the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday night with a 7:30pm opening face-off. Fans can hear all the action of every Toledo Storm game on 1520 AM Jams or online at www.toledostorm.com. The pre-game show on Saturday night begins at 7:15pm. The Storm will return to the Toledo Sports Arena next Friday, October 27th at 7:35pm when the Reading Royals will come to town. Toledo Storm Hockey...Great Team, Great Time!
