Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ - Greg Hogeboom's 5-on-3 shorthanded goal proved to be the decisive tally that sent the Trenton Titans to 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Reading Royals in the 2006-07 season opener at the Sovereign Bank Arena.
4,716 in attendance saw the back-breaker for Trenton come at 3:53 of the final period with the Titans on the two-man advantage. Hogeboom stole the puck at his own blue line and took it himself into the Trenton zone before firing a rocket into the top corner.
The Titans had taken a 1-0 lead just 1:25 into the contest when John Laliberte dug his own pass out of traffic in the slot and beat Reading goalie Yutaka Fukufuji for his first professional goal.
The Royals would answer back on their only power play goal in 14 chances as Jason Becker snuck a one-timer through the five-hole of Titans' netminder, Joel Martin.
With both teams skating with four players-a-side, Troy Riddle gave Trenton the lead once again as he took Benoit Mondou's face-off win the length of the ice and blasted a slapshot home at 11:43 of the middle period.
Despite a 37-22 shot advantage, Trenton could not put the game away. The Titans were scoreless on 11 man-advantages and Reading would capitalize.
The Royals started the comeback and made it a 2-2 game at 1:53 of the third when Kevin Saurette gathered up a loose puck and tucked inside the far post.
Martin finished with 19 saves with his first start for the Titans. On the other side of the ice, Fukufuji made 35 saves for the vitory.
The Trenton Titans will look for redemption on Saturday, October 22, 7:05pm at the Sovereign Center. Tune into 91.3FM-WTSR to listen live to all of the Titans' action.
