Toledo Goes Down in a Shootout

Toledo Walleye News Release
(Toledo, Ohio) For the first time in twelve tries, the Toledo Storm failed to win a game in which they scored first; but the Storm did take a point out of a 4-3 shootout loss to the Wheeling Nailers at the Toledo Sports Arena tonight.
The Storm struck on their first power play opportunity of the evening when Nathan Lutz fired a shot from the high slot that Wheeling goaltender, Mike Valley, stopped; but he left the rebound out front. Toledo's Mike Bayrack corralled the loose puck and jammed one from in tight that Valley rejected; but Bayrack got his own rebound and chipped it in for the 1-0 lead 5:46 into the contest. Wheeling made the most of a couple of loose pucks late in the first to take a 2-1 lead to the locker room after one. On the first one, Doug Teskey stopped a Zenon Konopka shot from the slot; but the rebound just sat out front, and Michelle Ouellet stuffed it in to tie things at one with 1:13 remaining. Then, with just 16 seconds on the clock, Bobby Russell found another loose puck out front after another Konopka shot and slipped it through Teskey to make it 2-1.
In the second, the Storm picked up two unassisted goals to regain the lead. On the first, Lutz stole a clearing attempt in the high slot and ripped a quick, low slap shot by Valley to tie things at two 8:43 into the period. On the second, Nick Parillo took a shot from the left wing that appeared headed over the Wheeling net; but the puck hit the shaft of Valley's stick and fluttered behind the goal. Parillo didn't give up on it, tracked the puck down behind the net, came out on the far side with it, and turned and wheeled one home.
In the third, Wheeling picked up a power play goal, when Mark Moore took a slap shot from the left wing point that snuck through a crowd out front to tie things at three with 9:57 remaining in the contest. No other pucks would enter either net until the shootout, despite a couple of opportunities at both ends through the remaining portion of the third period and the five-minute sudden death overtime.
Valley was particularly good down the stretch (as he was throughout the game--stopping 45 of the Storm's 48 shots), and he was perfect in the shootout, rejecting all four Toledo attempts, while Ouellet (shooting second) and Russell (shooting fourth) scored for the Nailers.
