
Blades Fall to Stingrays 5-4 in Overtime

ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (9-6-6) fell in overtime to the South Carolina Stingrays (15-7-1) 5-4 in front of a crowd of 5,897 at TECO Arena on Friday night. Stingrays defenseman Aaron Schneekloth notched the game winning goal one minute into overtime and forward Marty Clapton chipped in two goals and two assists to give South Carolina the win.
The Stingrays struck first on a goal off the stick of forward Marty Clapton at the 5:28 mark of the first period. The Everblades then tied the game after forward Tom Nelson notched his fifth goal of the season on a redirection at the 11:19 mark of the period. Florida then took a 2-1 lead after Joe Blaznek one timed a pass from George Awada on the power play. In the second period, the Stingrays made it 2-2 after Joel Irving slipped a shot past Florida netminder Cam McCormick.
In the third period, the Everblades took a 3-2 lead on a redirection by forward Kevin Brown. Forward Tom Buckley fired a shot from the point that Brown deflected through the legs of Stingrays goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck. Florida then made it 4-2 after George Awada sent a pass in front of the net to Ryan Murphy who zipped it in the net at the 7:44 mark of the period. However, the Stingrays stormed back and tied the game on goals from Dave Seitz and Marty Clapton. Clapton tied the game at four apiece with just :41 seconds left in regulation.
One minute into overtime, defenseman Aaron Schneekloth fired a shot from the point that went through the legs of Florida netminder Cam McCormick to give the Stingrays the win and the extra point in the standings.
Florida goaltender Cam McCormick (1-1-1) stopped 18 of 23 shots he faced while South Carolina netminder Kirk Daubenspeck (14-5-1) stopped 37 of 41 shots and picked up his league leading 14th win of the season. The Everblades were 2 for 4 on the power play while the Stingrays were 1 for 3.
Florida takes on the South Carolina Stingrays tomorrow night at TECO Arena. The puck drops at 7:38 PM due to the game being broadcast on UPN-8.
