Wilson Tobs News Release

WILSON, N.C. (July 20, 2011) - Two three-run homers paced the Wilson Tobs (6-10, 21-23) to a 9-1 blowout win over the Peninsula Pilots (6-10, 23-21) in front of 863 at Fleming Stadium on Wednesday night.

Center fielder Ryan Mathews hit the first of the three-run homeruns in the bottom of the first with no one out to put Wilson ahead 4-0. The homerun was the 13th of the season for Mathews, who set a Tobs single-season franchise record for homeruns, surpassing Erik Lovett who finished with 12 homers in 2007. The homerun was also Mathews' second in as many nights, and he finished the game 3 for 4 with two runs scored and four RBI.

The second three-run homer of the night belonged to 1B Steve Nikorak. Nikorak belted a ball over the left-center field fence with one out in the third to give the Tobs an 8-0 lead. It was the fifth homerun Nikorak had hit this summer, and the three RBI moved his season total to 18.

An eight-run cushion was plenty of support for Tobs starting pitcher Clay Murphy (2-1), who allowed only four base runners in seven innings of work. Murphy struck out eight batters while surrendering just one earned run to get the win. RHP Ethan Carter (1-2) was charged with the loss for Peninsula. Carter worked three innings in his first start of the summer, allowing eight earned runs on eight hits.

The Tobs remain at home tomorrow night as they take on the Outer Banks Daredevils. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. On the hill for Wilson will be LHP Brice Rivenbark (2-4), making his ninth start of the summer. Thursdays are "Thirsty Thursdays" at Fleming Stadium, with 16 ounce domestic drafts available in the beer garden for just $1.50, and fountain drinks available for $1.25. For tickets call the Tobs box office at 252-291-TOBS.

The Wilson Tobs are a proud member of the Costal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league.
