Errors Cost Blowfish In Florence

The Columbia Blowfish (5-11; 14-30) committed five errors against the Florence RedWolves (6-7; 21-20), leading to an 8-1 loss Wednesday night at Florence's American Legion Field.

The Blowfish struck first in the top of the fourth inning, when Reggie Weatherford scored on an error by RedWolves' 2B Wil Leathers, attempting to field a sharp ground ball by Brison Celek.

The RedWolves' offense exploded in the bottom of the fourth inning. Travis Benn hit a three-run home run off Blowfish starting pitcher Austin Pritcher. The RedWolves would add two more runs in the inning, scoring on an error by Blowfish 1B Tyler Jackson and an RBI double by Shane Basen, to lead 5-1.

Pritcher (2-5) gave up five runs and walked four batters in just three and two-thirds innings.

After the big inning, RedWolves' starting pitcher Michael Guinane (4-1) retired the Blowfish in the top of the fifth inning. Guinane gave up only one run in five innings.

The RedWolves offense struck again in the bottom of the seventh inning off Blowfish relief pitcher Alex Brooks. Travis Benn reached on an error by Weatherford to lead off the inning. Shane Basen hit an RBI double and Michael Wilson drove in a run on a fielder's choice.

Later in the seventh inning, Chad Hodges, relieving Brooks, walked Adam Matthews with the bases loaded to extend the Florence lead to 8-1.

Brennan Dorsett and Zach Hula combined to pitch four scoreless innings out of the RedWolves' bullpen.

The Blowfish return home to start a two-game series against the Morehead City Marlins starting Thursday night, while Florence travels to Fayetteville to face the SwampDogs.

The Columbia Blowfish are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 15th season in 2011, the CPL features 15 teams playing in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 930 alumni drafted and 45 alums make their Major League debut thus far.
