Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
PETERSBURG, Va. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs managed 13 hits and 20 base-runners, but only plated three runs in a 5-3 loss to the Petersburg Generals at the Petersburg Sports Complex on Wednesday night.
Fayetteville (26-17, 9-6) dropped both games of their post-All-Star break road trip and has now lost four of their last five games.
Petersburg (9-35, 5-11), meanwhile, managed just three hits but earned plenty of base runners behind eight walks and two hit batsmen. The Generals did not record a hit after the third inning, as Jimmie Davis and Cory Kent combined to throw five hitless innings of relief, but did manage two insurance runs without a hit in the fifth behind two walks, a hit batsman, and an error.
Sean Tracy (0-1) started for the SwampDogs and suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs in three innings pitched. He did strike out five, but gave up three hits and walked four, including three in the first inning when the Generals scored twice to tie the game.
Fayetteville, as they did Tuesday against Outer Banks, jumped on the board in the top of the first with two runs. Joe Vaskas delivered a bases loaded sacrifice fly, and Danny Gesick followed with an RBI double for the two SwampDog runs. But after Generals starter Matthew Hewitt walked Brian Yeung to once again load the bases, Dillon Checkal struck out to end the inning and strand three.
That would become the story of the night, as the SwampDogs managed a base runner in every inning but could not push across another run until the ninth. Hewitt (1-4) finished five innings for his first win of the season, allowing two runs on seven hits, with three walks and one strikeout.
Eric Conway pitched a scoreless sixth, seventh, and eighth before allowing a single by Grabe and an RBI double by John Hogan in the ninth. He was replaced by Tommy Isaacs, who walked the first batter he faced, Joe Vaskas, before striking out Danny Gesick and Brian Yeung and getting Dillon Checkal to ground to second to preserve the win and earn his first save of the season.
Eric Grabe delivered two more base hits to remain ahead of Konstantine Diamaduros of Forest City in the race for the most all-time hits in CPL history. Grabe now has 164 career hits in his three seasons in Fayetteville, two ahead of Diamaduros.
The SwampDogs return home to host the Florence RedWolves on Thursday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium. Gates open at 6 p.m., with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
