Titans Get the Point But Not the Win; Fall to SC in OT, 3-2
December 8, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Titans News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - It had all the makings of a playoff-type contest - two teams, needing a win to stay close in their respective divisions.
Trenton took the lead early, only to see it disappear into the third period. But when Andy Bohmback redirected home his 10th goal of the year late in the game, he guaranteed the Titans at least a point for their effort.
South Carolina decided to take the rest.
With a hustle steal in their offensive end, the Stingrays ended the overtime in under two minutes, sending the 2,600-plus faithful home happy with an entertaining 3-2 win Friday night.
The win and the two points means the Stingrays (11-12-0-224 points) remain in third place in the Eastern Conference's South Division. Trenton (8-10-1-118) inched to within four points of second place Elmira in the Atlantic Division.
Trenton jumped out quickly thanks to its power play. Marcel Noebels fed Jacob Drewiske in the low slot. His shot was stopped by Ryan Zapolski (W, 29 saves, 8-4), but the rebound found Ian Slater's stick and was quickly hammered home at 3:03 for the 1-0 lead.
Again, though, that lead was short-lived. Less than two minutes after Slater scored, SC's McNeely slipped one past Titans' keeper Scott Wedgewood (OTL, 14 saves, 6-6-1) to knot the score, 1-1.
Play stayed even until the Stingrays capitalized on their own power play at 12:35 of the second, when Daniel Koger notched his fifth of the year just 15 seconds into the man advantage for a 2-1 lead. Trenton nearly allowed it to get to 3-1 on its own power play in the frame, but Wedgewood made two huge, point-blank, short-handed saves to keep the Titans down by just a goal.
Zapolski kept the Titans at bay until Ryan Grimshaw finally got a chance to cut loose from the left point with under eight minutes left in regulation. Zapolski had it all lined up through the traffic in front - until Bohmbach redirected the shot just inside the right post.
In overtime, Daniel Koger made a nice steal in the Stingray's offensive left corner and fought a pass to Johnson, who quickly fed a streaking Daniel Kipp on the right post. The redirect beat Wedgewood for the game winner.
These two teams get to do battle again Saturday night at 7:05 pm in North Charleston. It will be the second and final time they will face each other in SC this year. The call of the game by Titans' broadcaster Daryle "The Bronc" Dobos, can be heard in Trenton on 107.7 FM The Bronc and online at 1077theBronc.com, with the pregame beginning at 6:45.
