WET WEDNESDAY / UGLY SWEATER PARTY
TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: After winning their second straight game in a shootout last night, the Cyclones will invade Evansville, Indiana for the first time as they meet the IceMen for their fourth match-up in two weeks. The Clones knocked off their division rivals in a shootout on Wednesday night, extending their season series lead to 3-1. They have outscored the IceMen by a combined total of 16-8 and have outshot them by an average of 35-26. Tonight will be the first of five meetings at the Ford Center.
SCOUTING THE ICEMEN: Rich Kromm's club mounted an improbable comeback last night, erasing a two goal deficit and exploding for six goals in the final two periods to beat the Walleye 8-5. Former Cyclone Nathan Moon and newcomer Wade MacLeod each had hat tricks in the game. Josh Beaulieu, though, remains atop the IceMen's scoring list - posting 18 points (10 goals, 8 assists) in 24 games this season. The veteran forward has notched a pair of points (1 goal, 1 assist) against Cincinnati through four meetings. Defenseman Matt Gens has crept up toward the top of the leaderboard as well, amassing 13 points (3 goals, 10 assists) in 2012-13. He is Evansville's leader in scoring vs. the Cyclones, with three points in the four games thus far. They have relied on a trio of goaltenders this year, with Allen York, Rob Madore and Paul Karpowich all seeing time in net. York is 2-1-0-1 with a 3.22 goals-against average in four appearances; he is 0-1-0-1 against Cincinnati with a 4.00 GAA. Karpowich has collected a 3-6-0-1 record with a 3.48 GAA while Madore is 4-7-0 with an 3.11 GAA.
About Last Night vs. Kalamazoo: The Cyclones came from behind to win a game for the fifth time this season as they picked up a thrilling 4-3 shootout triumph over the Wings in front of 4,349 at U.S. Bank Arena. The win was their second shootout victory in as many games. John McFarland had his second multi-goal effort in the last week, picking up a pair of tallies and a shootout goal.
Defense Early, Defense Often: The Clones have been one of the toughest teams to score against early in games. They have allowed just 16 first period goals and only 167 shots - which rank second and third fewest respectively in the ECHL. Not surprisingly, Cincy has scored the first goal of the contest in 15 of their 21 games this year.
Stayin' Clean: The Cyclones have continued to be among the ECHL's least-penalized teams. Cincinnati has been whistled for an average of just 15.47 minutes-per-game - the sixth-fewest among all 23 teams. Additionally, they have third fewest major penalties (15) in the league.
The Golden Goalie: After resting last weekend, Brian Foster is back between the pipes for the Cyclones and is among the ECHL's best. His 2.15 goals-against average is second best among active goalies in the league and his eleven wins pace the ECHL. The runner-up for Goalie of the Month, Foster is just 3 wins shy of becoming the Cyclones club goaltending leader in career wins.
