Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals dropped a 3-1 decision to the Reading Royals on their annual Teddy Bear Toss at First Arena on Saturday night. The loss moved Elmira's record to 10-10-2 on the season.
The Jackals and Royals battled to a scoreless first period despite a bevy of shots sent Philipp Grubauer and Marc Cheverie's ways. The Royals opened the game with seven of the first eight shots, but Cheverie was sharp early on. Particularly as he helped the Jackals kill off four minutes of penalty time just past the midway point of the period. Then it was the Jackals' turn to test Grubauer with some power play time. Elmira earned 1:18 of a 5-on-3 in the final minutes and launched several quality shots on goal. But Reading's netminder matched Cheverie save-for-save and the teams went into the break tied scoreless.
Reading controlled the action for the early part of the second period and used that control to grab the lead. Ethan Cox capitalized off of a Jackals turnover to score his first goal of the season at 4:38. Yannick Tifu made it 2-0 with his sixth of the season a minute and a half later. Tifu lofted a shot past Cheverie after the Jackals' goaltender initially stopped Stanislav Galiev's close-range bid. Barry Almeida then converted at 11:07 to lift Reading ahead by three goals. The Jackals pressed over the second half of the period and out-shot the Royals 12-11 in the stanza but still couldn't solve Grubauer.
It took until just past the midway point of the third for the Jackals to break through with a hard-working goal. After Grubauer couldn't corral a Louie Caporusso backhander, Brad Peltz dug the rebound from behind the net and banked it to Jean Bourbeau. The Jackals captain found the back of the net at 10:25 for his seventh goal of the season and brought the teddy bears onto the ice. The goal extended Bourbeau's goal streak to four games and Caporusso's helper earned him a six-game point streak. The Jackals continued their comeback attempt with a power play with just over three minutes to play but couldn't find any more offense.
Cheverie shouldered the loss while making 27 saves. The Jackals were 0-for-5 on the power play and 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.
