Titans Beat Evansville Again with a Short-Handed Goal, 3-2

Trenton Titans News Release

Trenton, N.J. - The Titans, proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, overcame a slow start Friday night to beat the Evansville IceMen, 3-2, and climb back to a .500 record, in their return to the Sun National Bank Center after 14 days away from home.

The Titans (7-7-0-1, 15 pts) remain undefeated against Evansville (5-12-0-1, 11 pts), who are in the midst of their first ECHL season after joining the league in August. Trenton took the only other matchup, 4-3, last month in Evansville.

The Icemen got the jump on Trenton early, with Pat Kennedy beating Titans goaltender Scott Wedgewood (5-3, 25 saves) over the shoulder just 1:15 into the contest.

Evansville continued to press throughout the first, and minutes later Trent Vogelhuber buried a short-handed opportunity to increase to Evansville lead to two less than ten minutes into the contest.

It was all Evansville in the first, but Trenton came roaring back in the second, starting with an Andrew Johnston power play goal. Johnston tallied his first of the season as a Titan, after taking a drop-pass from Stephen Schultz and putting a shot through Evansville's Rob Madore (3-7, 34 saves). Andrew Conboy was also credited with an assist on the play.

Bryan Haczyk then knotted the game at 2-2, late in the second, cleaning up the rebound of a Matt Konan shot in front of Madore for his fourth of the year. Conboy added his second assist of the night, and fifth of the season, on the tying goal.

In the third, the home team came out firing, and it proved to be all Titans for the rest of the night. Andy Bombach broke the tie seven minutes into the final frame, scoring shorthanded on an up-and-down night for Titans special teams. The Hudson, Wisconsin, native picked up a loose puck at center ice and broke in alone on Madore, beating the IceMen netminder with a quick deke and putting the puck just under the crossbar. Bombach earned Ace Hardware "First Ace" honors for the game winner, his seventh of the season and second shorthanded. The Titans have beaten the IceMen in both of their meetings with an early third period, short-handed goal.

The Titans outshot Evansville, 37-27, and got a slight edge in special teams as well, going 1-for-6 on the power play to Evansville's 0-for-3. Each team surrendered a short-handed goal in the contest.

The Titans will try to earn back-to-back wins for the first time since October 17th, as they host the Greenville Road Warriors tomorrow night at the Sun National Bank Center. In their only matchup this season, the Titans downed the Road Warriors, 3-1, on opening night in Trenton. Face-off Saturday is set for 7:05 p.m.

As always, that game can be heard on the home of the Titans, 107.7 FM The Bronc, or online at 1077thebronc.com with Daryle "The Bronc" Dobos, the Voice of the Titans. Tune into the Bronc Wednesdays at 8 p.m. for the Titans Coaches show, hosted by Dobos and broadcast live from Killarney's Publick House in Hamilton.
