Elmira Jackals News Release

ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals picked up their third consecutive victory by taking down the South Carolina Stingrays 1-0 on Friday night at First Arena. The win improved Elmira's record to 9-6-1 on the season.

The first period was physical and intense as evidenced by the teams' combined 33 penalty minutes. It featured fights between Chaz Johnson and Alexandre Beauregard as well as Rob Bellamy and Art Bidlevski. Despite all of the rough stuff and power play opportunities, neither team was able to break through on the scoreboard. Marc Cheverie made his second straight start for the Jackals and stopped each of the 10 shots he faced. At the other end of the ice Ryan Zapolski was equally effective as he turned away all seven shots the Jackals sent his way.

Despite not scoring on a five minute power play and a 50 second 5-on-3 advantage in the first period, the Jackals' power play came through in the second and provided the first goal of the game. Andrew Rowe took a pass at center from Kyle Bushee and made a Stingrays' penalty killer miss just above the blue line to give himself a lane into the zone. He then chipped it behind the 'Rays' defense and out-raced both defenders to the puck. A quick snap shot beat Zapolski high to the glove side and put the Jackals in the driver's seat. Danny New and Kyle Bushee assisted on the goal at 6:39. Cheverie was at his busiest in the second as he made 11 saves.

After 10 combined power plays in the first two periods the Jackals and Stingrays played a majority of the third at even strength. South Carolina, in an effort to come back, managed most of the opportunities as it out-shot Elmira 10-to-6. Aiding that stat was the fact that South Carolina earned the only power play of the period when Artem Demkov was whistled for tripping at 15:07. Despite crashing the net as hard as they could, the Stingrays could not find a way to solve Cheverie and Rowe's goal proved to be enough for the win.

Cheverie stopped all 31 shots he faced to pick up his sixth win of the season. The Jackals were 1-for-4 on the power play and 7-for-7 on the penalty kill.
