SPOKANE, Wash. - A three-goal second period by the visiting Everett Silvertips doomed the Spokane Chiefs as the home team fell 5-1 at Spokane Arena on Sunday Night. Riley Whittingham scored his sixth goal of the season in the loss.
The Chiefs jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the game, just #:## into regulation, as Riley Whittingham chipped a deflection up and over Everett goaltender Carter Hart's shoulder. Adam Helewka extended his team-best point streak to eight games with an assist on the play.
Everett responded right before the horn for the end of the first period as Matt Fonteyne forced a turnover at the Chiefs blueline and beat goalie Matt Berlin on the other end for a shorthanded goal. The unassisted goal was scored with only 13 seconds left before the intermission.
The second period was all Everett as they scored three times beginning with a give-and-go tally by Carson Stadnyk at the 7:51 mark. Stadnyk dished it to team-leading scorer Remi Laurencelle down the middle, who quickly returned the puck to the right wing where Stadnyk one-timed it home to put the Tips up 2-1.
Winger Brandon Ralph surprised Berlin with a soft shot at the 14:28 mark, beating the rookie netminder low for his first goal as a Silvertip, extending the Everett lead to 3-1.
Laurencelle extended his goal streak to four games with a tap-in goal off a cross-crease pass from Mackenzie Dwyer at the 15:31 mark to make it 4-1. Verhelst replaced Berlin before Laurencelle added another goal off a Dario Winkler feed to make it 5-1 early in the third and final frame.
Both teams were scoreless on the power play. Berlin stopped 11 of 15 shots faced in 35:31 while replacement Verhelst made 11 saves on 12 shots in 24:29. Hart turned aside 25 shots in a one-goal win, earning him second star honors.
The Chiefs remain home for their next home game on Friday, December 4 versus the Seattle Thunderbirds. It will be Fred Meyer Shop with the Chiefs Night at Spokane Arena as one lucky fan will walk away with a $1,000 shopping spree to Fred Meyer.
